Phil Parkinson has singled out one Wrexham player for praise after watching his side secure a win over Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham took one step closer to securing a third straight promotion when they made the trip to Wycombe on March 15th.

The Red Dragons were aiming to bounce back after losing 2-0 to Reading earlier this week but were facing one of their toughest challenges this season.

Wycombe have been outstanding this term and spent a good chunk of the campaign sat inside the automatic promotion spots.

However, in what proved to be a very tight match that could have gone either way, Sam Smith scored in the 78th minute to hand Wrexham a 1-0 win.

Smith’s contribution is obviously massive, but Phil Parkinson made sure to praise another player for his efforts on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson praises George Dobson after Wrexham beat Wycombe

Arthur Okonkwo made some key saves across the 90 minutes and a few more players impressed.

But arguably the most important moment of the game, barring perhaps the goal, came from George Dobson.

The midfielder has been in and out of the side recently due to injury problems but made his return to the eleven against Wycombe.

And fans will be very glad he did after Dobson – right as the game restarted – cleared a Wycombe effort off the line following a corner.

Wrexham went on to score a minute later and the former Charlton Athletic man has now earned the praise of Parkinson post-match.

He said when speaking on the club’s official YouTube channel: “We had to defend a corner straight away and it [was] a heroic goal-line clearance from Dobo [George Dobsobn] absolutely brilliant.”

He added: “The lads won a header and it’s a brilliant clearance from Dobo, key moment, really key moment for us that.”

Phil Parkinson urges caution after Wrexham victory over Wycombe

Fans and players are no doubt delighted following the match, but there is still a lot of work to be done this season.

Wycombe have a game in hand, which comes against Rotherham United on Tuesday, and a win for them in that tie would put them back inside the automatic promotion places via goal difference.

Meanwhile, following Saturday’s encounter, Parkinson stated Wrexham will not overcelebrate the result.

He said: “After losing on Tuesday (at Reading), as much as I moaned about the ref, we could have done better.

“But if you take the last six away games, we’ve won five of them, that’s an incredible return for us.

“Today we put it right. It was key that we’re not going to over celebrate this because it’s just three points, but it’s a big win.”
