Wrexham head into the international break with a valuable win having dismantled Northampton Town in a 4-1 thrashing on Saturday.

The midweek defeat at Stevenage raised some attacking concerns for Wrexham.

Wrexham had drawn two blanks in a row on the road and failed to score from open play in four straight games.

The League One season is a long, long slog though and there was no panic as Wrexham got right back on track against Northampton Town.

James McClean opened and finished the scoring whilst Jack Marriott and Elliot Lee also find the net in a 4-1 win.

Wrexham are so good at home and Saturday’s game has certainly helped Phil Parkinson get back on track.

Phil Parkinson on Arthur Okonkwo deal

Wing back Ryan Barnett stole the show for Wrexham having effectively set up all four goals with crosses from the right flank.

A number of other Wrexham players impressed too though, including goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.

The summer signing racked up five saves to keep Northampton at bay and ensure this didn’t turn into a high-scoring draw at the STōK Cae Ras.

Okonkwo was a major coup for Wrexham over the summer having impressed on loan in League Two last season.

Boss Parkinson has now commented on Okonkwo and paid tribute to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in the process.

Speaking to The Athletic, Parkinson noted that Okonkwo’s arrival is a deal that the should should be ‘very proud’ of managing to complete.

Parkinson praised McElhenney, Reynolds and Shaun Harvey for ensuring that Okonkwo rejoined Wrexham permanently, noting that there was lots of rival interest.

“It was a deal that we should be very proud of,” said Parkinson.

“Inevitably, there was a lot of interest because it’s not often a player of Arthur’s profile ends up a free transfer. The owners did well to get the deal over the line in the summer with Shaun. It wasn’t an easy one to do,” he added.

Okonkwo could make a big decision this season

Okonkwo put himself in the shop window with his displays on loan at Wrexham last season but decided to commit his future to the club for the long term.

Wrexham are reaping the rewards and Okonkwo may well become an international off the back of his displays.

Reports suggest that Okonkwo has held talks over a potential Nigeria call-up.

Okonkwo has previously represented England at youth level but qualifies for Nigeria through his parents.

Okonkwo isn’t in the Nigeria squad for this international break but the Wrexham stopper may well switch his international allegiance this season.

The Wrexham stopper is certainly impressing in League One this season and few would argue if he chased an international career with Nigeria in the coming months.
