Phil Parkinson praises ‘top-class’ Wrexham star who ‘puts his body on the line’

Wrexham manager, Phil Parkinson has praised Jordan Tunnicliffe for his performance in the draw with Bradford City.

Making his first Wrexham start of the season, Tunnicliffe had a game to remember despite coming away with just a point.

Paul Mullin had given Phil Parkinson’s side the lead halfway through the second period but Adam Wilson levelled the game.

Despite a raft of chances, the home side were only able to score one. This is despite them having 24 shots on the day, but 10 of those were blocked and four saved.

What has Phil Parkinson said about Jordan Tunnicliffe?

The former Crawley man was on fire against the Bantams and rightly received praise from his manager.

He made one block, nine clearances, five-headed clearances and seven recoveries, all done while he won 10 of 14 duels.

A monstrous performance, that Parkinson commented on, saying: “I thought Jordan typified the performance.

“Some of the defending he did in the box was absolutely top-class. Sometimes you have got to appreciate that as much as the skill higher up the pitch.”

The 30-year old was drafted in for his first League Two start of the campaign. This was due to illness keeping out Aaron Hayden.

Despite this surprise inclusion, you would have thought Tunnicliffe had been a regular for many years.

One factor his boss picked up on was: “He is a player who puts his body on the line for the team.”

These kinds of players who are willing to fill in and still give their all when given the chance are vital and help make a squad.

Tunnicliffe selection dilemma

After his performance, it would be harsh to drop the Englishman when Hayden returns from his illness.

Given that he had only played a total of 10 league minutes prior to the game at Valley Parade, it is even more impressive.

Up against Sutton United at The Racecourse, he has to be given another chance to show what he can do.

Showing that good performances can see you earn a first-team place off the bench is the kind of mentality that will help the Red Dragons push up the league.
