Wrexham have made a strong start to life in League One but the conversation in recent days has shifted to European football.

Nine games in and Wrexham can be delighted with the start to the League One campaign.

Five wins, two draws and two defeats leave Wrexham second in the table, sitting behind runaway favourites Birmingham City.

Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Stevenage was concerning from an attacking perspective with Wrexham looking toothless going forward.

Wrexham have still made a fine start though and can be optimistic of a successful first season back in League One.

Ryan Reynolds wants another promotion this season but some Wrexham fans are actually eyeing up European football.

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham idea

That may sound bonkers but Wrexham are exploring a route which could potentially land the club in European action down the line.

Reports broke Sunday suggesting that Wrexham are in talks to join the Welsh League Cup.

Cardiff City, Newport County and Swansea City are also understood to be interested in joining.

Proposals have been presented to UEFA, The FA, the Premier League and Welsh top flight clubs with Wrexham seemingly serious about taking this step.

Reynolds and Rob McElhenney may well be attracted by the idea of qualifying for Europe through this route.

The winner of the Welsh Cup can qualify for the UEFA Conference League and Phil Parkinson has now delivered his verdict on the idea.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Parkinson suggested that this is an ‘amazing’ idea for Wrexham, seemingly excited by the prospect of European action.

Parkinson added his hope that an agreement can be reached as McElhenney, Reynolds and co continue talks.

“To have that opportunity to get into Europe again for the club would be amazing,” said Parkinson.

“Hopefully that comes to fruition,” he added.

Wrexham would be one of the favourites

Most League One clubs struggle to match Wrexham’s spending power and that would certainly be the case for Welsh clubs.

The New Saints have been regular winners of the Welsh League Cup and they have a Conference League clash against Fiorentina on Thursday night.

Those nights would be quite the experience for Wrexham and Parkinson’s side would be one of the favourites if a deal is done.

Cardiff and Swansea have Championship spending power but Wrexham would have real belief of beating either side if matched up.

This is exactly why some Cymru Premier clubs may be reluctant though.

A route into Europe would be much, much harder for those teams if Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea and Newport all get involved.

Parkinson is hoping that this idea comes to fruition but there are likely to be some twists and turns in the coming weeks and months with clubs no doubt having varies opinions.
