Phil Parkinson reveals the one very ‘important’ reason why Wrexham signed George Dobson

Phil Parkinson has now shared his reaction after Wrexham completed the signing of midfielder George Dobson.

Wrexham made their third signing of the transfer window on Saturday as former Charlton Athletic midfielder George Dobson arrived on a three-year deal.

Dobson opted to leave Charlton this summer and had been expected to complete a move to Hungarian side Fehérvár, but he pulled out due to personal circumstances.

The 26-year-old has now returned to League One with Wrexham, following goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and centre-back Lewis Brunt through the door.

Phil Parkinson’s midfield is arguably the strongest area of the pitch, featuring the likes of George Evans, Andy Cannon, Elliot Lee and James McClean. The addition of Dobson – who captained Charlton 43 times last term – has only added to the quality in the engine room.

Phil Parkinson shares why Wrexham signed George Dobson

To sign the West Ham academy graduate is an impressive piece of business and the Englishman will bring an array of technical and leadership qualities to the Racecourse Ground.

Dobson is also supremely experienced in the third tier, having racked up a mammoth 265 appearances in League One at clubs such as Charlton, Walsall, Sunderland and Wimbledon.

The positives of signing the bullish midfielder severely outweigh the negatives, and Parkinson has picked out his leadership as being an attribute that is ‘so important’ in his squad.

Speaking to Wrexham’s official website, Parkinson said: “George is a great signing for us. He’s developed really well as a player and is someone we have known about for a while.

“He plays with real personality; he is a great character to have in the building and he has captained Charlton before.

“Leadership quality in the group is so important and George will certainly bring that.”

Wrexham are nailing their recruitment

The signing of Okonkwo has set the tone for an incredible transfer window.

Wrexham beat off Championship interest to land the goalkeeper’s signature, and he didn’t see himself joining any other club after last season’s impressive loan spell.

Okonkwo’s arrival was followed by Brunt, who joined from Premier League side Leicester City earlier this week.

The 23-year-old will add ball-playing qualities to the Wrexham defence and be a player who can lead this back line for years to come alongside Max Cleworth.

Parkinson has signed two young talents there who will only get better as time goes on while Dobson looks like the finished article.

Whilst there’s still room to improve, he was impressive in his three campaigns at Charlton and rarely missed a game for them.

In a long and gruelling third-tier campaign, Wrexham need quality but they also crave players that rarely get injured, and Dobson luckily ticks that box.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have opened this transfer window in some style, with the Reds showcasing their power to attract incredible players.
