Phil Parkinson saw Kieffer Moore playing in a very different position, years before Wrexham move

Wrexham have wrapped up the signing of Kieffer Moore, with the Welsh international striker completing his move on Tuesday.

We know that Phil Parkinson loves a target man, with Ollie Palmer playing a starring role during Wrexham’s rise.

Palmer’s minutes have faded in 2025, meaning Parkinson has now moved to bring a new target man to the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham have confirmed the signing of Kieffer Moore, bringing the striker in from Sheffield United in a deal believed to be worth around £2million.

The Welshman was spotted at the STōK Cae Ras on Monday, so fans were merely waiting for confirmation of his arrival.

Moore has signed a three-year deal at Wrexham and will now offer a new focal point to spearhead Parkinson’s attack.

Phil Parkinson once saw Kieffer Moore playing as a central defender

Moore is about as proven as they come in the Championship, bagging 59 goals in 200 appearances in the second tier.

The 32-year-old is a nightmare for opposition defenders due to his huge 6ft 5in frame, but that size actually saw him play a different position earlier in his career.

Moore joined Yeovil Town from Dorchester in 2013, and his time with the Glovers resulted in playing time at centre-back.

In fact, Moore’s first game in that position saw him line up against Bradford City in 2015 – managed by none other than Phil Parkinson.

Moore registered an assist in a 1-0 Yeovil win, and earned plaudits off the back of a fine performance as a makeshift defender.

“It’s always a position I felt he could be comfortable with,” said boss Gary Johnson when speaking to BBC Sport.

“When lads are young, they want to be strikers because they think they’ll be worth more than centre-halves. Their mums, dads and agents are probably telling them to be strikers. But he’s a brave lad when he’s at the back. We’ve done it in training and in pre-season friendlies – albeit against lower opposition.

“We had a few centre-halves we could have brought in, but that would have had to be on loan. This was exactly the right time to bring in Kieffer,” he added.

Moore has played 14 games as a centre-back in his career; nine for Yeovil and five for Forest Green Rovers, before fully committing to being a striker.

That decision has certainly paid dividends for Moore, who has proven himself as a quality striker at Championship level over many years.

Moore has been brought to Wrexham to score goals, and while Parkinson may remember his display as a central defender, we can’t see him replicating that experiment any time soon!

Kieffer Moore scored against Wrexham in 2016

Not only did Moore have that rather unusual introduction to Parkinson, but he scored against Wrexham just a year later.

By this point, Moore was playing as a striker for Torquay United, and he was on the scoresheet with a towering header to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw.

In another strange twist of fate, Transfermarkt note that the assist for that Moore goal came from Luke Young.

Young went on to become a Wrexham hero, but he was on the other side on that day and produced the ball in for Moore to bury his header.

Wrexham have come a long, long way since that game and are now able to bring in Moore as a new goalscoring threat ahead of the new season, marking a significant coup for Parkinson and co.
