Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has admitted being reassured by Ryan Reynolds after losing to Grimsby Town in 2022.
All the focus right now is on Wrexham’s push for promotion to League One.
Two wins in a row have given Wrexham momentum and it looks like being another dramatic end to the season, one way or another.
Wrexham won promotion last year, exorcising demons from the frankly unbelievable play-off semi-final defeat to Grimsby Town a year earlier.
A back-and-forth game at the Racecourse ended with Grimsby striking the final blow, just minutes before extra time came to an end.
Wrexham had to get up and go again, and Phil Parkinson has now shared the message from Ryan Reynolds…
Ryan Reynolds made promise to Phil Parkinson
Parkinson has now reflected on 150 games in charge of Wrexham whilst speaking to Fearless In Devotion.
The Wrexham boss spoke about a number of highs and lows from his time at the club and, unsurprisingly, that game against Grimsby came up.
Parkinson admitted that losing such a crazy game – and therefore missing out on a chance at promotion – was a ‘crushing blow’.
However, co-owner Reynolds came down to the pitch to give Parkinson a promise; that the squad would be strengthened for another tilt at promotion.
Parkinson noted that Reynolds immediately vowed to improve the squad and Rob McElhenney echoed that message as the pair flew back to the United States.
Parkinson felt that message meant a lot to him and Wrexham became ruthless, adding strength to the squad and offloading players who just weren’t good enough for the challenge ahead.

“The play-off game was a crushing blow because, obviously the manner of game, but we were vulnerable at the time defensively, we knew that, but we always had the ability to outscore the opposition with the players and the goal threats we’ve got in the team,” said Parkinson.
“The big thing for me, straight after the game, Ryan just said to me ‘Look Phil, we’re gonna build this squad even stronger, we know, you know where we’ve fallen short’, that’s just literally on the pitch after the game. They both messaged me on their flight back saying that, and that meant a lot to me because it was a blow, of course, we’d took Stockport to the wire, which I felt was a decent achievement because Stockport had been building for a long time for that season, we were playing catch-up in many respects.”
“We looked as a staff, we had a break, and we just said ‘look, this is what we need, we need to make sure that the strength is better and we can’t be putting players out there representing the club who we feel aren’t good enough for the job’, and we just made the squad stronger to withstand the challenge of the season ahead,” he added.
Just look at Wrexham’s business in 2022; a host of players were released with more offloaded or loaned out to trim the squad.
In came the likes of Elliot Lee, Anthony Forde and Jacob Mendy, players who still make an impact to this day.
Parkinson clearly views that summer as a pivotal moment and appreciates the backing of Reynolds to go and make those changes happen.
