Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has made a bold claim about Wrexham’s ambitions for the season, claiming that the newly promoted side has the quality to win the league.

The Red Dragons were the success story of the National League, earning promotion with a remarkable 111 points, and returning to the fourth division for the first time since 2008.

It promises to be a difficult season as Wrexham prepare to battle the step-up in quality following their promotion, but their goalkeeper remains unfazed by the challenge.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Foster, who came out of retirement to make a sensational move to Wrexham before signing a one year extension, expressed his confidence ahead of next season.

“You can say that we want to finish in the top half, top six or top two but I don’t think we’re going to look at it like that,” he stated.

“We want to go and win every single game and I feel we’ve got a good enough team to go and win this league, genuinely.

“There’s no divine right to win or to be in the top six, it doesn’t work like that.

What are realistic aims for Wrexham next season?

Despite the excitement around Wrexham following promotion, the club are yet to make any signings, whilst they have also released seven players.

Wrexham beat Notts County by the finest of margins to secure top spot last season, and League Two will not be a walk in the park for Phil Parkinson’s side.

Keeping Foster will be a big boost, as the former Manchester United goalkeeper, who is still arguably too good for the division, will provide a lot of key experience at the back.

Wrexham will have to rely on the likes of Paul Mullin to replicate their excellent campaigns from last season, and hope that they can compete for a playoff spot.

Avoding a relegation battle should be the minimum aim, but it remains to be seen how well this current squad will cope with facing better sides unless extra quality is recruited in the transfer market.
