Rival fans have been left fuming with Wrexham following the announcement that they are closing in on a club-record EFL Trophy attendance against Newcastle Under-21s – here’s why.

Fans from other EFL clubs have been giving the club and its supporters grief on social media following the announcement on Twitter.

The club advertised that tickets were still available for the game against Newcastle, available to home members only. It also reminded supporters that all tickets were sold out for all home league games released so far – so to act quickly to get to see the boys live.

However, this has caused quite a stir… why is this the case?

Rival fans angry at Wrexham

The replies to the Tweet below are filled with hatred towards the club and its fans for nearing a club-record attendance… but why?

Well, according to The League Paper, since the inclusion of U21 Premier League and Championship sides in the competition, many fans have now started boycotting matches in the EFL Trophy.

Fans believe that it’s made the competition a ‘Micky Mouse’ or ‘joke cup’, which is purely experimental and for the benefit of the development teams and nothing else.

Due to Wrexham posting that it could be their highest attendance ever, combined with the fact it is against a U21s side – this is a lower-league Twitter feud recipe for disaster.

Circumstances are a little different

Whilst this is infuriating for rivals, you have to think from a Wrexham supporter’s perspective.

Tickets to watch Wrexham are like golddust this season. Some fans won’t even get the chance to see the Red Dragons live at the Racecourse throughout the entirety of the campaign.

Because of this, many will be purchasing tickets to see this fixture, no matter the usual prejudices towards the competition.

We think that this time around -it’s more than fair.
