Rob McElhenney has now explained the real reason he chose Ryan Reynolds to be the co-owner of Wrexham.

When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were confirmed as new owners, everyone knew things were about to change at Wrexham.

The Hollywood duo purchased the football club in February 2021 and three years on from that day, few could have predicted what was about to unfold at one of football’s oldest clubs.

The unlikely marriage between Hollywood and historic Wrexham has seen a huge boom in success, support and social media profile.

It would have been unthinkable for most supporters to see the Reds in League One three years on from their takeover however, as Phil Parkinson prepares his side for their biggest challenge yet, McElhenney is reflecting on what has been a whirlwind couple of years.

McElhenney had the idea of purchasing a football club, in what started as an “idle pub chat” with executive director Humphrey Ker before the owner then became intent on seeing the plan through.

Rob McElhenney explains why chose Ryan Reynolds as his co-owner

Ker was the one who convinced McElhenney to purchase the Welsh football club and the Hollywood superstar was able to get Reynolds on board.

McElhenney had never met the 47-year-old before but he knew of him through his work and felt that would be able to “vibe” together.

That couldn’t be much closer to the truth years on from purchasing Wrexham, with the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star explaining why he chose Reynolds to be his co-owner.

Speaking to Northern Public Radio, McElhenney said: “I thought of Ryan because we were friends. We had never met in person, but we were friends via text.

“And not only did I enjoy his work, I thought that we would vibe. I think we have a very similar worldview. He has got a great reputation. I just think that he is an incredibly ethical person. I know that he is kind. And every interaction that we had via text was always super positive.

“And, of course, he’s incredibly entrepreneurial, so I knew he would understand right away.”

This is only the start for Wrexham

McElhenney choosing Reynolds to be his co-owner has proven to be an inspired decision. Irrespective of what they’ve achieved, the pair have great chemistry with each other, as seen in the Welcome to Wrexham, while they also share the same vision.

For the Welsh side to achieve consecutive promotions for the first time in their history is incredible and the Hollywood duo are only just getting started.

Reynolds and McElhenney outlined their ambitions of reaching the Premier League as soon as they tookover. The saying you should learn to crawl before learning to walk resonated well but three years on from posting their mission statement, Wrexham are now just two promotions away from achieving their dream.

And this is why Wrexham are only at the start of their journey, with the owners outlining their ambition to build a 50,000-seater stadium.
