Rob McElhenney previewed Wrexham’s first game of season this weekend in a video which featured a genius cameo from Paul Mullin.

After spending the summer playing a series of friendlies in the US, it’s back to business for Wrexham who kick of the new League Two campaign this weekend.

After a fifteen-year hiatus, the Red Dragons are back in the fourth tier of English football. The first game of the new season takes place this weekend, with a home fixture against MK Dons on 5 August. Sports fans across the globe will no doubt be tuning in to see how the Welsh club fares this season as the club continues its upwards trajectory under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Rob McElhenney previews Wrexham’s first game of season with genius Paul Mullin cameo

On Twitter recently, co-owner Rob McElhenney shared a short video of himself previewing the weekend’s game against MK Dons.

Filming himself on a balcony, Rob starts out saying, “so I’m about to take off from LA to get on the flight to go see Wrexham’s first game back in the league.”

However, he’s then interrupted by someone inside the apartment as he spins around and says, “pillow?”. Rob then nonchalantly hands none other than Wrexham striker Paul Mullin a pillow, who appears to be crashing on Rob’s sofa.

Mullin briefly appears on camera and gives a thumbs up before Rob carries on as if nothing happened, saying, “first game back in the league…yeah you got it”, in reference to handing the pillow to Paul.

McElhenney manages to keep a straight face throughout and ends the video by saying, “it’s going to be a tight one against MK Dons. They’re a good squad and obviously we’re hoping for the best, very excited, up the town.”

The Wrexham striker is recovering at Rob’s house after suffering punctured lung

The short, and subtle, skit comes after the news that Mullin is recovering at McElhenney’s house following a nasty injured he suffered on tour in the US. Wrexham’s goalscoring hero punctured a lung in a collision with Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop during a match on 26 July, and is unable to fly home for a “couple of weeks” because of it, according to McElhenney.

However, Rob being the hospitable owner that he is, has said that Mullin can stay at his place while he recovers until he’s able to fly back.

“He’s [Mullin] OK. I just texted with him this morning,” McElhenney recently said. “He’s in San Diego and he’s going to come over and stay with us for a couple of weeks until he can leave and head back to Wales.”

There’s no specific timeframe for Mullin’s return but he’s set to miss the first few games of the season as he recovers. Get well soon, Paul!
