Rob McElhenney has now explained how footballing icon David Beckham inspired one key detail in Wrexham’s 2024/25 kits.

Wrexham’s start to the League One season has been amazing as Phil Parkinson’s men sit atop the table after five matches.

The Reds have continued their upward trajectory, inspired by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, to make a fast start on their return to the third tier.

To many, Wrexham have become recognisable through their stylish home shirt, which is worn in most games, with one key detail inspired by ex-Manchester United winger David Beckham.

How David Beckham inspired Wrexham’s 2024/25 kits

While McElhenney and Reynolds don’t get involved in the playing side of things, one thing the Hollywood owners have a say on is the Wrexham kits.

At the end of each season, they will come together with Shaun Harvey and Humphrey Ker to decide how they’d like the kit to look.

Wrexham’s kits have a retro feel to them this term with the dragon scale fabric and stylish collar.

McElhenney claims that he wanted the shirts to ‘look from the 90’s’ and that included releasing a long sleeve version of every shirt, a decision that was inspired by the kits Beckham and other players wore during that period.

Speaking on the Men In Blazers podcast, McElhenney said: “The one thing that me and Ryan insisted upon, and this was after having seen the Beckham documentary – we both watched that the weekend it came out – and we wanted to get a long sleeve version of every shirt.

“We wanted to be a bit loose and billowy and that look from the 90’s that Beckham and all the players and clubs seemed to wear those throughout that decade. We wanted to have something like that, so I think very soon all three kits are going to be available in the long sleeves.”

Birmingham City vs Wrexham

The Beckham-inspired kits have looked good on Wrexham this season, with the Reds collecting 13 points from a possible 15 in the league.

Parkinson’s side are unbeaten in their first five matches and have come through acid tests against Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United.

However, underneath the Sky Sports cameras on Monday night, Wrexham will face their biggest test of the season so far; a trip to big spenders Birmingham City.

The American-owned Blues are expected to bounce straight back to the Championship after spending over £20 million in the window, which is an obscene amount of money for League One level.

There is huge pressure on Birmingham to deliver promotion and although they’ve started unbeaten in their first four, Wrexham will be looking to make a statement of intent on Monday.

Taking a victory away from St Andrews would be incredible and it would show that they mean business.

On the other hand, losing the match wouldn’t be the end of the world, as it wouldn’t take anything away from their impressive start.
