Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney is being praised for his speech after seeing ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ win an award.
The last few days have been difficult for Wrexham fans.
There hasn’t really been much to shout about after a 1-0 defeat at Gillingham on Saturday.
Wrexham’s promotion rivals picked up wins and we could hardly blame Wrexham fans for shutting off from football for a couple of days.
There has been one positive over the last 24 hours though – and it comes thanks to ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.
Rob McElhenney speech praised
“Every single human being on his planet has a beautiful story to tell if we are willing to listen. This is not a show about football, this is a show about a town, this is a show about human being and I am so grateful to the people of Wrexham for telling their story, and I am so grateful for the world to listen.”
Those were Rob McElhenney’s touching words as he received a rather prestigious award on Sunday.
The 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards ceremony was held on Sunday night and ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ took home an award.
That’s right, the FX documentary series about McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds taking over at Wrexham grabbed an ward.
The likes of Oppenheimer and Succession won awards too, so Wrexham being recognised was quite the moment.
‘Welcome to Wrexham’ won the ‘Outstanding Producer of Non-Fiction Television’ award with McElhenney speaking on stage after the announcement.
The words from McElhenney have earned praise from Wrexham fans, with his continued humility and understanding of Wrexham as a town defying his ‘Hollywood’ status.
The Washington Post’s national culture writer Jada Yuan called McElhenney’s speech the ‘best of the night’, seemingly blown away by the Wrexham co-owner.
Many know McElhenney for his work on the ridiculous It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but the Wrexham story is touching hearts everywhere – and it’s a lovely moment that Wrexham fans probably needed after a disappointing few days.
