Sean Newton claims he couldn’t believe one thing he saw from Wrexham supporters during his time at the club.
Sean Newton made 61 appearances for Wrexham during a two-year stint between 2015 and 2017, scoring eight and assisting six from left-back or defensive midfield.
Newton was brought to the club by Gary Mills in 2015 and although he never earned promotion to the Football League with the Reds, finishing eighth and 13th, he did have fond memories of his time at the club.
In a career that has seen him play for 11 different teams, currently at Non-League side Ashton United, the 35-year-old has plenty of stories to tell, and some interesting ones during his spell in Wales.

Reflecting on his footballing journey on the I Had Trials Once podcast, the veteran defender couldn’t believe what he saw from ‘passionate’ Wrexham supporters.
Newton claimed they’re the best he’s ever seen at the clubs he’s played for, saying: “First training season we’d done, straight away fans are up to you.
“I can’t remember which team we played but there were about 400 fans there watching us train and then I think we played a game as well.
“We had an open day at the ground, the stand was full and straight away they’re on you, like at the time ‘we need to get promoted this year’. To be fair, they’re the best fans I’ve played for in terms of how passionate they are.”
Newton was blown away by how incredible the fanbase was despite the lack of success during that period, spending countless years in the National League.
It demonstrates that Wrexham were a big fish in a small pond for several years as the fanbase deserved to be watching them in the Football League, a wish they’ve been granted now.

Following back-to-back promotions, supporters will be excited about the prospect of League One football.
It’s been 19 years since Wrexham were plying their trade in the third tier, and given Rob McElhenney’s and Ryan Reynolds’s ambitions, promotion is expected.
Their words will be reinforced by ambition in the transfer window, with a finance expert backing the Reds to spend big and match the other promotion chasers.
From playing Boreham Wood on Tuesday night to watching Wrexham against ex-Premier League sides, Birmingham and Huddersfield, it’s been some journey over the past few years and one their passionate fanbase will saviour.
