Wrexham are hotly contesting promotion to League One and former player Mark Creighton has issued his prediction.
After winning promotion in record-breaking style last term, many tipped Wrexham and Notts County to challenge in the upper echelons of League Two.
While County have dropped like a stone down the table and are now in a lowly 17th position, Phil Parkinson’s men have rarely dropped out of the top four.
The Reds have kept up with those fighting at the top and are currently three points inside the automatic promotion places.
The only time their credentials as candidates have looked slightly in question was when they lost three matches in a row at the start of February, but Wrexham have responded to that slump by losing just one of their last eight matches.
As we enter a pivotal period, despite losing James McClean to suspension for two matches, Parkinson has enough quality in his squad to avoid slipping out of the top three and perhaps even challenging for the title.
Ahead of their home clash against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, former Wrexham defender Mark Creighton has issued his prediction and he’s confident that the Welsh side can complete back-to-back promotions.
Mark Creighton is confident Wrexham can win promotion
Creighton, who made 83 appearances for the Reds between 2011 and 2013, has explained Wrexham’s squad depth as the reason why he believes his former side can see the job through.
Speaking on the Rob Ryan Red podcast, he said: “I said at the end of last year I see another promotion this year. I think we’ve got enough strength in depth, it does look like we’ve got a few bodies coming back as well.
“You look at the lads who didn’t even make the squad, it’s sensational really. It’s been a long time since we’ve been at the position where you can go ‘Blimey, we have got a serious squad here.’ So, I still think we have enough.”
Creighton’s confidence is justified by the fact that Wrexham’s strength in depth is ridiculous for League Two level.
With Paul Mullin leading their charge, who fired Cambridge United to promotion out of the fourth tier three years ago, the Reds are always a threat in attack.
Likewise, midfielder Elliot Lee – their second top scorer this term with 15 goals – possesses class and quality from midfield in abundance.
That isn’t the tip of the iceberg as Wrexham can name former Derby County striker Jack Marriott and Manchester City academy graduate Luke Bolton on their bench.
Given Parkinson is spoilt for choice and can name a starting XI at this level that most sides can only dream of, perhaps he would be seen as a failure if he didn’t win promotion, but there is confidence that he can guide the Reds to the third tier.
