Former Wrexham man Anthony Barry was recently appointed the new England assistant manager by Thomas Tuchel.

Wrexham fans will no doubt be eager to see their side back in League One action this weekend when club football returns.

It has been an interesting international break for England, with a former Wrexham man now taking up a new role with the Three Lions.

Former Middlesbrough star Gareth Southgate left his role as England manager over the summer with interim boss Lee Carsley having a less than productive few months in the dugout, which included a shock 2-1 defeat to Greece this month.

With Carsley clearly not up to the task, the FA opted to appoint former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel as Southgate’s permanent replacement.

The German wasted little time selecting his coaching staff, with Former Wrexham man Anthony Barry joining England as assistant manager.

Shocking reason England assistant manager Anthony Barry left Wrexham

Prior to becoming the England assistant manager, Barry enjoyed a decent playing career and has since excelled as a coach.

Tuchel and Barry worked together at Chelsea and Bayern Munich while the latter also enjoyed spells under Roberto Martinez with Belgium and Portugal.

Now though, former Wrexham manager Dean Saunders has opened up on the shocking reason Barry left Wrexham in 2010, as per the Mirror.

He said: “He told me, ‘Fleetwood have offered me double the money’. I said, ‘Well, it’s too late, you’ve signed for us now’.

“He said, ‘Yeah but gaffer, come on, I can’t turn that down’. I said, ‘No, you’ve signed for us’. There had been back page headlines with the shirt on and everything.

“I couldn’t believe it. I sat there for a couple of days and thought, ‘If you don’t want to be here, if you want to be somewhere else, you might as well go’. Then he went to Fleetwood.

“The next time I saw him, he was on the bench at Chelsea. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on there?’

“Apparently he met Frank Lampard on a coaching course, ended up helping Frank and working his way up. That is a story of how you can get on, from the bottom to Bayern Munich and he’s now England assistant manager. Amazing. A nice lad as well, by the way.”

Anthony Barry time at Wrexham

Though he left Wrexham in shocking fashion back in 2010, the now-England coach did eventually line out for the Red Dragons.

He returned to the Racecourse Ground in 2016, joining on a free transfer from Accrington Stanley.

The former central midfielder went on to play 32 times for Wrexham in all competitions, scoring two and assisting one.

He left the club at the end of the 2016/17 season and hung up his playing boots at the same time.
