‘So soft’: Phil Parkinson left furious with both penalty decisions v AFC Wimbledon

Phil Parkinson was left furious following the full-time whistle against AFC Wimbledon, with two dodgy penalty decisions going against the Red Dragons.

It looked like Wrexham looked destined to get their first win in the English Football League this season after an Elliot Lee strike gave the Welsh club the lead for 81 minutes until a second penalty of the day was awarded to Wimbledon.

This one was converted by James Tilley, which meant the points were ultimately shared at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. Unlike the penalty in the 66th, which was saved by Ben Foster.

Wrexham felt that both these penalties were a little dubious, with head coach Phil Parkinson making his thoughts known following the full-time whistle.

Phil Parkinson furious at penalty decisions

An animated Parkinson spoke with media following the game and had the following to say about the two penalty incidents:

“I’ve just looked at the two penalty incidents and, oh my goodness me,” said Parkinson. “We have come up a level and this referee has been around a bit.

“The first one, in relation to what has gone on in the penalty boxes all through the game, to pick that moment out to give a penalty. The second one is unbelievable.

“Eoghan has gone up. If there is a nudge, the lad has fallen to the floor and a referee of his standard has to identify that.

The second pen was ‘so soft’

Parkinson was particularly infuriated by the penalty that actually got Wimbledon back on level terms. The Englishman didn’t hold back when he was asked about the second decision.

“The second one was so soft, it is unbelievable,” proclaimed Parkinson. “Incredible he has given that.

“The first one, I have just gone in there (to see referee Drysdale) to ask, ‘Can you tell me before I do the press who you have given that against?’ If there is a slight tug of the shirt, it is minimal.

“Whatever has gone on in the box throughout the game and on the pitch that he has let go, to give that I find incredible. He said it was Boyley.”

Whatever Parkinson thinks, the be-all and end-all is that the game should have been put to bed anyway. Wrexham created lots of chances in the first half and should have doubled their lead on multiple occasions.

They even missed a great chance right at the death, with Sam Dalby missing a chance that according to Parkinson – “has to go in the back of the net.”

Wrexham now host Walsall on Tuesday night – where they’ll be desperate to pick up their first three points of the season.
