Steven Fletcher admits Wrexham ‘buzz’ convinced him to snub retirement

Wrexham head into the summer transfer window with plenty of attacking options at Phil Parkinson’s disposal – and Steven Fletcher could yet stay too.

There is no doubting who takes most of the headlines in an attacking sense at Wrexham.

Paul Mullin is the main man, goalscoring hero and three-time Player of the Season who has racked up 105 goals in 140 games for Wrexham.

Nobody is knocking Mullin off his Wrexham perch any time soon but Parkinson does have other options at his disposal.

Ollie Palmer remains a big threat whilst January signing Jack Marriott should be ready to thrive after a full pre-season at the club.

Wrexham still have decisions to make on the likes of Jake Bickerstaff and Sam Dalby, and all of that is without even factoring in Steven Fletcher.

The Scot is out of contract this summer and chipped in with eight goals in 33 League Two appearances.

Fletcher only started 10 games but was able to make a real impact as Wrexham secured promotion to League One.

Steven Fletcher on ‘buzz’ around Wrexham move

Fletcher was 36 at the time of his arrival and he had a big decision to make over his future.

The former Scotland international left Stoke City in 2022 after two years at the club, landing a return to Scotland with Dundee United.

Fletcher moved on after just a year at Tannadice though and was left with a big decision to make after Dundee United’s relegation from the Scottish Premiership.

Wrexham came in to sign Fletcher last summer having seen Mullin go down with a nasty injury suffered against Manchester United in pre-season.

Fletcher has now stated on season three, episode two of Welcome to Wrexham that he was actually considering retirement after leaving Dundee United.

Speaking on Disney+, The veteran striker wondered whether he was ‘done’ with his playing career and was considering hanging up his boots in order to focus on his family.

However, Fletcher received a ‘buzz’ around a potential move to Wrexham and the interest convinced him to keep playing and extend his career a little longer.

“When I left Dundee United, I’m not gonna lie, in the back of my mind, I was thinking… is that me done?” said Fletcher. “I was just half-thinking ‘do I just now concentrate on family, being a dad and a husband on a more day-to-day basis? But I think after about a month, the wife got sick of me and she was like ‘no, you’ve still got something, your career’s not over, you’ve still got something there to give’.”

“Even if you’re not a Wrexham fan, as a footballer, when you watch the kind of highs that they’ve had, you still get that little buzz watching it and that’s all I needed – I just needed something inside me that was gonna be like ‘let’s go again’,” he added.

Wrexham offer Fletcher new deal

Fletcher may now find himself in a similar boat this summer.

There was some initial confusion as Fletcher’s profile on the official Wrexham website suggested that he was under contract under 2025.

That has since been removed and Wrexham have today confirmed that a new contract has been offered to Fletcher.

Wrexham must now wait and hope that Fletcher does want to carry on playing towards his 38th birthday.

Few could blame Fletcher if he does want to move away from football but another experienced head for the League One season would be welcomed.
