Wrexham saw a deal for Luke Armstrong collapse last summer – and the striker finds himself heading towards relegation with Carlisle United.
Last summer was a successful one for Wrexham.
Major experience arrived as Will Boyle, James McClean, George Evans and Steven Fletcher all joined the club.
We have seen an impact from all four of those players whilst Arsenal loanee Arthur Okonkwo has been simply outstanding.
Phil Parkinson will have no real complaints about the summer business but he did miss out on one signing in frustrating circumstances.
Luke Armstrong situation looks bleak
Wrexham wanted to land striker Luke Armstrong from Harrogate Town and appeared to have a £500,000 deal in place on transfer deadline day in September.
Armstrong – formerly of Middlesbrough and Salford City – had racked up 30 goals in two seasons for Harrogate, sparking Wrexham’s interest.
The 27-year-old looked Wrexham-bound but disaster struck late on with Wrexham confirming that documentation for the transfer had been submitted too late.
The EFL rejected Wrexham’s attempts to register Armstrong, leaving him to see out the first half of the season with Harrogate.
Many expected Armstrong to eventually end up at Wrexham in January but he instead joined League One side Carlisle United.
Paul Simpson was looking for Armstrong to make a big goal impact for the second half of the season, but it just hasn’t happened.
Armstrong has scored just once in seven games for Carlisle, who sit rooted to the bottom of the League One table.
Carlisle have now lost seven games in a row and are 13 points adrift of safety with just 14 games remaining.
Relegation back to League Two is looking increasingly likely and Armstrong may well find himself back in the fourth tier.
Wrexham could take Carlisle’s place in League One, but any chances of seeing Armstrong in the famous red and white at the Racecourse has surely gone now.
