Welcome to Wrexham Season 2 is imminently about to hit our screens, but one publication that wasn’t a fan was The Independent – who gave the new series two stars out of five.
The new season of Welcome to Wrexham will be coming out next week, specifically airing on Tuesday, September 12th 2023.
This season will end in much happier circumstances (spoiler alert) with this season depicting Wrexham’s promotion to the English Football League.
It’s going to be a fantastic spectacle, with so much packed into it for Wrexham fans and football fans alike to relive. However, some haven’t been too keen.

The Independent absolutely slam Welcome to Wrexham Season 2
Some critics got given access to the episodes early, including The Independent’s Nick Hilton – who really wasn’t a fan.
He gave the new series a measly two stars out of five and had some really harsh words to say about it.
‘Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s tenure in charge of Wrexham AFC is documented in a series that fails to do justice to the mud-and-blood world of non-league football,’ the tagline reads.
Hilton goes on to explain a lot of what’s involved in the series and then proceeds to rip into the concept of the programme and the Hollywood duo’s aspirations for the club.
‘The football never really mattered to Welcome to Wrexham,’ it states. ‘The diehard Welsh fans might celebrate the team’s triumphs and endure their defeats, but the project has always been a fundamentally commercial one.’
‘Each weekend the XI turn out in shirts bearing the slogan of Chinese social media giant TikTok, while club staff are photographed, endlessly, in jackets emblazoned with the emblem of Aviation American Gin, a brand co-owned by Reynolds.’
‘There is a strong sense that we are watching, at best, a multi-layered advert. At worst, it’s a piece of vapid capitalist propaganda masquerading as a sports documentary.’
‘The series somewhat takes the gloss off Wrexham’s on-field endeavours, which culminate in an unprecedented 111-point haul.’
It’s evidently clear to see what they think of the show, but two stars are harsh given the fact they barely mention anything wrong with the series – just the fact it’s an ‘advert’.
