Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson was full of praise for midfielder Andy Cannon for his performance against Notts County.

The 27-year-old returned after serving a three-game suspension for a red card, but his performance today was like he’d never been away.

Cannon was crucial for Phil Parkinson’s side throughout the promotion campaign last season, with the midfielder continuing to be key to the Welsh side.

Phil Parkinson on Andy Cannon

Speaking to Wrexham’s media team after the game, Parkinson admitted that Cannon has had an up-and-down start to the season, but admitted he took his opportunity today.

“Andy [Cannon] was excellent for us last season, he was a key player and he’s had one of those starts to the season where it’s been disrupted for one reason or another.

“Then culminating in the sending off, however, he’s trained really well lately.

“I was pleased to give him a deserved opportunity today and boy did he take it.”

Cannon pushing Wrexham closer to promotion places

There’s certainly an intense rivalry between the two teams given what went on last season.

Speaking before the game at Meadow Lane today, the Wrexham boss admitted he was aware of what Notts County bring to the table, and said there’s a ‘mutual respect’ between both clubs.

However, he masterminded a brilliant performance against County, with Cannon crucial to his playstyle in gaining all three points.

The Red Dragons may have endured a difficult start to the campaign, but the pieces are slowly starting to fall into place again, with Parkinson’s side looking like a force to be reckoned with.
