‘Two levels above’: Phil Parkinson hints Wrexham star has the ability to play in the Championship

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin was back to his best with a stunning brace against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, and manager Phil Parkinson has now praised the attacker’s ability.

Mullin tore the National League apart last season, with it evident that he should have been playing at a higher level, but suffered a punctured lung in pre-season.

He returned to action after missing the start of the season and got on the scoresheet for the first time since April at the weekend with his brace.

Both goals were outstanding, with his overhead kick in the first half a particular highlight, and Parkinson has now claimed that Mullin’s pure finishing ability could see him playing at Championship level.

Parkinson has now claimed that the EFL does not have many better finishers than the 28-year-old, whose goals at the weekend helped a ten-man Wrexham clinch a dramatic draw.

“There are not many players at this level or the two levels above who could produce finishes like that,” Parkinson stated of his first goal.

“He’s had a tough week with a family bereavement but that was Mulls firing on all cylinders.”

Mullin is probably one of the best pure goalscorers in League Two, with his astonishing return of 45 goals in the National League last season proving vital for promotion.

His ball-striking ability can be translated to a higher level, and if he picks up where he left off in terms of consistency in front of goal, he has the potential to tear League Two apart like he did the National League.

If Wrexham are to achieve their aim of back-to-back promotions, they will need Mullin to stay fit throughout the campaign and continue to deliver in front of goal. If Wrexham go up, Mullin has the ability to continue as a starter at League One.

When finishing comes as naturally to a striker as it does with Mullin, then that ability can be useful at any level of the game.
