Phil Parkinson was left fuming at two players in Wrexham’s loss to MK Dons in their opening game of the season.

Wrexham have, of course, clinched a second consecutive promotion as Phil Parkinson and his players look forward to a League One campaign.

A 6-0 hammering of Forest Green Rovers was enough to seal their destiny and set a club record of back-to-back promotions.

The beginning of their return to the Football League wasn’t plain sailing, though, as Wrexham were beaten 5-3 by MK Dons on the opening day of the campaign and Parkinson was left fuming by two of his players.

Phil Parkinson says two Wrexham players offered ‘absolutely nothing’ vs MK Dons

Only five of the players that started the opening day defeat against MK Dons played the final game of the season, which demonstrates how much Wrexham’s squad evolved as the season went on.

To put into context how much things have changed, Parkinson started Sam Dalby and Billy Waters as a striking duo in that match while Paul Mullin was recovering from his punctured lung.

Waters and Dalby struggled to leave their mark in Mullin’s absence as the Wrexham boss was left far from impressed with their performance.

In the first episode of Welcome to Wrexham season three, episode one Parkinson claimed that his two strikers offered ‘absolutely nothing’ as he prepared to bring on Jake Bickerstaff and Ollie Palmer.

“For me, the front two have given us absolutely nothing,” he said.

“I think we need to go two for two, haven’t we? Ollie [Palmer], Bickers [Jake Bickerstaff] make sure you’re ready.”

The futures of Billy Waters and Sam Dalby

Waters, a signing from Barrow last year, was loaned out to Doncaster Rovers in January after playing just three times for the Reds.

The 29-year-old has unfortunately not left a good impression under Grant McCann, failing to score in any of his 11 appearances.

Meanwhile, Dalby did play a regular part in the start and middle of the campaign, making 31 appearances in League Two but only four of those have come in his last 17, scoring just once.

It is likely that having made the step up to League One, Wrexham will look to part ways with Waters and Dalby, either on loan or permanently.

Parkinson has just offered a contract extension to Steven Fletcher, so that duo stand no chance of breaking into his first-team plans, leaving them better off departing the club.
