Wrexham produced an outstanding performance to draw with Chelsea as co-owner Ryan Reynolds was unable to attend for one key reason.

Wrexham continued their pre-season preparations on their Wrex Coast tour with an impressive 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

The Reds initially went behind as Christopher Nkunku bagged on 35 minutes before Phil Parkinson’s men fought back with goals from Luke Bolton and substitute Jack Marriott, only for Lesley Ugochukwu to equalise eight minutes from time.

It was the second time on the tour that Wrexham had held their own against Premier League opposition, following their draw against Bournemouth, with the Welsh side looking extremely fit and sharp ahead of their League One campaign.

Hollywood co-owner Rob McElhenney would have been pleased with what he saw against the Blues however, Ryan Reynolds sadly missed the match due to one key reason.

Ryan Reynolds misses Wrexham vs Chelsea as Deadpool vs Wolverine premieres

In normal circumstances, Reynolds would have been alongside his co-owner to watch Wrexham take on Chelsea at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

It’s their rare opportunity to see their team in the flesh, as it’s difficult for the Hollywood owners to fly across to England due to their acting commitments.

That was the key reason why Reynolds was unable to attend his side’s thrilling 2-2 draw as the 47-year-old’s big movie Deadpool vs Wolverine is due for release in cinemas this week.

The Canadian actor has been all around the world doing promotional work for the film. Last week, he was in the UK doing promo work, with the world premiere for the film taking place in New York on Monday.

Reynolds would have been disappointed not to have witnessed Wrexham go toe-to-toe with a Premier League giant but it’s understandable as to why, with Deadpool vs Wolverine set to be one of the biggest films of the year.

Wrexham showing promise in pre-season

Parkinson is assembling a strong squad with the funds provided by McElhenney and Reynolds as the likes of Sebastian Revan, George Dobson and Lewis Brunt all started and held their own against Chelsea.

Of course, it’s only pre-season and the result of friendlies doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things but to see a game plan come to fruition and the players gain match fitness would have left Parkinson pleased.

In their first two matches, they’ve gone toe-to-toe with Premier League opponents and they’ll aim to do similar when they take on Vancouver Whitecaps in the final game of their Wrex Coast tour.

Wrexham kick off their return to League One at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, August 10th.
