Wrexham contract mistake emerges as released defender now locked in talks

Wrexham allowed a number of players to leave the club this summer but may now be in a tricky situation with one player.

Phil Parkinson has guided Wrexham to back-to-back promotions and is looking to bolster his squad for the challenge ahead.

Bringing signings in usually means that some players have to move on though and Wrexham released a host of players this summer.

Luke Young, Ben Tozer and Aaron Hayden were all let go and have already found new clubs.

Cheltenham Town, Forest Green Rovers and Carlisle United have pounced respectively, with the trio not exactly out of the game for long.

Rob Lainton and Callum McFadzean are still waiting for new clubs but confusion now surrounds another player who appeared to have left Wrexham.

Jordan Tunnicliffe’s Wrexham contract explained

Wrexham’s retained list also featured defender Jordan Tunnicliffe alongside Lainton, Tozer, Hayden, McFadzean and Young.

The centre back joined Wrexham from Crawley Town in 2022 and played an important role in the National League promotion-winning season.

Tunnicliffe faded out of the plans last season and it was no surprise when Wrexham announced that he was being released at the end of his two-year deal.

There is just one problem – Tunnicliffe’s contract legally runs until 2025.

The Daily Mail claim that an ‘input mistake’ means Tunnicliffe’s contract expiry date reads June 2025 – not June 2024.

Wrexham had announced Tunnicliffe’s departure but the 30-year-old finds himself officially as a Wrexham player.

The report adds that Wrexham are aware of the administrative error and are working on a resolution.

Tunnicliffe seemingly wasn’t aware upon being released, having said his goodbyes to the Wrexham squad and even been removed from the squad’s WhatsApp group chat.

The defender now finds himself involved in something of a contract saga with talks now ongoing between Wrexham and Tunnicliffe.

Tunnicliffe should have suitors

This is a rather embarrassing mistake for Wrexham and one which could cost the club some money if Tunnicliffe’s final year has to be paid up.

The experienced centre back will be hoping to find a new club this summer but needs to get this Wrexham situation resolved before signing elsewhere.

Parkinson praised Tunnicliffe as an ‘immense character’ upon his apparent departure in May and managers will certainly have an interest in his services.

A proven National League and League Two defender, Tunnicliffe should have no trouble finding a new club – as long as this Wrexham contract situation is resolved sooner rather than later.
