Liam McAlinden may have departed for Scunthorpe United but one moment has left Wrexham fans branding him a ‘legend’.

Wrexham brought in a striker before the transfer deadline as Jack Marriott arrived from Fleetwood Town.

Out went Jack Bickerstaff on loan to Accrington Stanley whilst Liam McAlinden had his contract ripped up.

The former Wolves talent played more than 50 times for Wrexham but only managed one goal, representing a workmanlike, versatile option in attack rather than a real goal threat.

McAlinden’s contribution in the last few years was appreciated but Wrexham terminated his deal, enabling him to join a new club on a free transfer.

Scunthorpe United secured his signature and McAlinden opened his account for the club on Saturday against Wrexham’s bitter rivals Chester…

McAlinden flicked a header into the far corner of the net, bringing Scunthorpe level at 1-1.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw but Scunthorpe finished up with 10 men – because McAlinden had been sent off.

McAlinden committed a ‘dangerous’ challenge at 2-1 down and was given his marching orders.

In usual circumstances, Wrexham fans would love to see former players scoring against Chester.

Yet in this instance, Wrexham supporters are actually loving that McAlinden picked up a red card against the bitter rivals.

Replies to Scunthorpe’s tweet on McAlinden’s red card were flooded with Wrexham fans paying tribute to the striker.

‘Wrexham legend’ read one tweet whilst another called him ‘agent Macca’.

One tweet stated ‘You can take the man out of Wrexham but you can’t take the Wrexham out of the man’ and there were responses in the quote tweets too.

‘Once a red always a red’ and ‘One of us’ were just some of the messages as Wrexham fans loved seeing McAlinden getting in a bit of trouble against Chester – even if it’s in slightly poor taste!

That is just the nature of football rivalries and whilst few would want to see any lasting damage from the foul, Wrexham fans will just love the idea that McAlinden dislikes Chester.

Chester and Scunthorpe are both pushing for promotion from the National League North this season and Wrexham fans will certainly be cheering on McAlinden and the Iron in the coming weeks.
