Wrexham have pulled off an enormous transfer coup by tempting goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo back to the club on a permanent basis.

We couldn’t blame any Wrexham fan for allowing themselves to dream about potential signings after winning promotion in April.

The days of being stuck in the mid-table region of the National League are long over with Wrexham achieving back-to-back promotions.

The Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era has seen Wrexham pull off some impressive transfers, especially in terms of luring players from higher divisions.

Promotion to League One will have naturally left fans believing that Wrexham could lure players from the Championship – or even the Premier League.

Wrexham hero Andy Morrell reacts to Arthur Okonkwo deal

Wrexham’s transfer business has been a little slow in terms of getting going, with some fans growing a little impatient at the lack of activity.

It took two months from being promoted for Wrexham to secure a signing, but this one was well worth the wait.

Wrexham confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo on Saturday, bringing him back to the STōK Cae Ras permanently.

Okonkwo became a real fan favourite at Wrexham last season having arrived on loan from Arsenal.

The Gunners have allowed Okonkwo to walk away at the end of his contract this summer and the expectation was that Wrexham would face a real battle for his signature.

Wrexham have managed to win the race though, handing Okonkwo a three-year deal in a hugely impressive deal for the club.

Fans are delighted to see Okonkwo return to the club permanently and Wrexham hero Andy Morrell has now offered his thoughts.

Morrell has taken to social media to admit that he ‘never thought’ Okonkwo would be coming back to Wrexham permanently.

Morrell felt that too many clubs in higher divisions would be wanting Okonkwo, but that his return to the club sums up the pulling power of Wrexham under McElhenney and Reynolds.

The former Wrexham hitman added that Okonkwo is a ‘great’ first signing of the summer and believes that the stopper still has so much development to come.

What do Wrexham need next?

Signing Okonkwo, as Morrell says, is superb start to the summer for Wrexham, but there should be much more to come.

Going from the National League to League One in such rapid fashion leaves Wrexham needing major additions in a number of areas as the club adjusts to greater competition.

Wrexham certainly need to focus on bringing in centre backs having allowed three defenders to move on this summer.

Ben Tozer, Aaron Hayden and Jordan Tunnicliffe have all moved on and Wrexham must bring in a number of new options at the back.

Midfielders will be on the wish list too with Elliot Lee needing some competition in terms of being an attacking spark in the final third.

Luke Young’s exit also leaves Wrexham needing more of a defensively-minded midfielder whilst another left wing back would be a smart addition.

Okonkwo is the dream start to the window but Wrexham need to follow that deal up with more quality – and we would back the club to make it happen having pulled off such an impressive signing.
