Wrexham head to Forest Green Rovers in League Two this weekend.
Wrexham and Forest Green Rovers meet in a league fixture for the first time since 2017 this weekend.
Back then, the two were in the National League. Now though they meet in League Two after Forest Green’s relegation from League One and Wrexham’s promotion from the National League.
And it looks like their respective trajectories could continue this season with Forest Green second-from-bottom and Wrexham second-from-top.
David Horseman is the man in charge of Forest Green. His side have won just four league games this season compared to Wrexham’s 10, and Horseman is well aware of the individual threats that Wrexham pose his side.
Horseman singles out Wrexham stars
Whilst Wrexham have been a standout side in League Two this season, they remain a side prone to inconsistency.
They lost away at Accrington Stanley last month hand have suffered defeats against MK Dons and Stockport County too, conceding five goals in both games.
Speaking to Gloucestershire Live ahead of this weekend, Horseman noted Wrexham’s quality, but also reiterated the fact that they can be beaten.
He said:
“They have got set-play threat from all over the place and are the best in the league by miles and they are massive but with loads and loads of quality and we will have to stand up to that this weekend and if you do then actually teams like Accrington for example, got three points out of it and Harrogate, they turned the tables after I think Wrexham were 2-0 up and ended up getting a point.”
Horseman then picked out Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin, James McClean, and Elliot Lee as four Wrexham players who are potential match-winners for the Welsh club, saying:
“So there are definitely ways where you could get at them, but if you do not, the (Ollie) Palmers, the (Paul) Mullins, the (James) McCleans and the Elliot Lees, if you do not close those threats out, then yes they are above the level for sure.”
‘Above the level’, and beyond?
Many expected Wrexham to be challenging a second-straight promotion this season, and after a shaky start, they’re really starting to look good.
Inconsistencies remain but on the whole, Phil Parkinson‘s side have been very impressive of late, with huge amounts of praise going to the four names singled out by Horseman.
Mullin has been showing his class since his return from injury. Elliot Lee and Ollie Palmer have contributed heavily with 16 goals between them, and James McClean has brought a huge amount of class and experience to the ranks.
Forest Green will know they’ll be right up against it this weekend, but they can take hope from the fact that Wrexham have been beaten heavily on the road this season, so it certainly won’t be a walk in the park for Parkinson’s men.
But another convincing win would further bolster their promotion credentials this season.
