Wrexham will be back in League One next season and can look forward to third-tier action for the first time in nearly 20 years.
Phil Parkinson’s side secured promotion last weekend, hammering Forest Green Rovers 6-0 at the STōK Cae Ras.
Saturday saw Wrexham play the final away game of the League Two season and Parkinson saw his side show no mercy despite already being up.
Wrexham beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0 with a superb performance as Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin and Andy Cannon all got on the scoresheet.
Wrexham now have just one league game to play this season, finishing up the campaign against champions Stockport County next week.
This has been another stunning campaign for Wrexham, achieving back-to-back promotions to go from National League to League One in rapid fashion.
A third promotion in a row would be a big ask but Wrexham can look forward to some fascinating games in League One next season…
Wrexham have big games to look forward to in League One
Just look at the Championship relegation picture.
Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers – all previously Premier League clubs – are still in danger of the drop into League One.
Portsmouth are already up and Derby County are surely set to join, but Wrexham will still face off against some huge clubs.
Wigan Athletic, Charlton Athletic and Reading will be in League One next season whilst only one of Bolton Wanderers, Peterborough United, Barnsley, Lincoln City, Oxford United and Blackpool can go up in the play-offs.
Wrexham fans will be flocking to big away grounds next season, some of which fans could have only dreamed of visiting in league action just a few years ago.
Wrexham v Shrewsbury Town on the cards
This weekend’s results also meant that Shrewsbury Town have secured their League One status for another season.
Paul Hurst’s side drew 1-1 at Charlton Athletic on Saturday and that point keeps them in the third tier, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
21st-placed Cheltenham Town still have two games to play but cannot catch Shrewsbury.
That means the Wrexham v Shrewsbury will be back on the table next season and the rivalry will be back once again.
Wrexham are well clear of Chester right now and won’t have Tranmere Rovers to face next season, so the focus will be on the rivalry with Shrewsbury.
We saw Wrexham go to Croud Meadow in the FA Cup earlier this season, claiming a superb 1-0 victory in the third round of the competition.
Shrewsbury defender Tom Flanagan stoked the rivalry with some strong comments before the game but was left with egg on his face as Thomas O’Connor bagged the winner.
Now rivals in the league for the first time since 2008, Wrexham will be desperate to claim more bragging rights against Shrewsbury once again and Saturday’s confirmation of their League One status will get the two fanbases riled up for months to come.
