Wrexham midfielder Andy Cannon ranks fourth in League Two for one impressive statistic; it shows how invaluable he is to Phil Parkinson.
Wrexham clinched a comfortable 3-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday. Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin both combined to each score while Andy Cannon continued his rich vein of scoring form.
Having scored once in his previous 27 appearances in League Two, Cannon has four goals in his last seven, including a brace in the vital 3-1 victory over Grimsby Town.
To put it into perspective, only Mullin in the Wrexham squad has found the net more during this period.
Phil Parkinson has offered Cannon a new lease of life, an opportunity to get in on the action and show his class in the final third.
Despite demonstrating added responsibility in Wrexham’s attacks, the 28-year-old still works exceptionally hard defensively.

Cannon’s recent goal-scoring exploits can’t distract anyone from the fact he’s a midfield destroyer.
The Englishman rose to prominence at the Racecourse due to his immense work rate and ability to break up attacks.
Even his greater influence from an attacking perspective hasn’t altered his metrics defensively, with Parkinson’s midfield machine still disrupting the rhythm of the opposition and being a real nuisance to play against.

As delineated by the above table, Cannon’s defensive metrics are still high despite his increase in responsibility, ranking fourth for tackles won in League Two. Only Grimsby’s Kamil Conteh, Barrow’s Luca Stephenson and Stockport’s Nick Powell have won more tackles per game.

Praise has been reserved for Cannon throughout this campaign and unsurprisingly so, having dominated his opposition throughout.
In a season of progression for the club, the Wrexham midfielder has shown a different side to his game; an ability to contribute in the final third.
This has supplemented his tenacity, strength and ball-winning performances and transformed him into a complete midfielder.
As Wrexham make the anticipated jump to League One, Parkinson will need to make changes to several positions.
However, the current midfield of George Evans, Elliot Lee and Cannon could remain untouched and still hold its own in the third tier.
Hopefully, Cannon will continue playing with freedom in the division above, as he’s been a breath of fresh air to watch this season.
