Wrexham star, Elliot Lee has called out Tom Flanagan for his comments prior to Wrexham’s 1-0 win over Shrewsbury this weekend.
A great season was made even better this weekend as Wrexham secured their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Both managers went strong but Phil Parkinson and his side were able to come out on top despite being under the cosh.
The home side dominated for large spells but the Reds were still able to get through. Thanks to a deflected goal by Tom O’Connor, a 1-0 win was secured.
Prior to the game, Shrewsbury defender, Tom Flanagan had made some comments about Wrexham which didn’t go down well with fans. He said: “Whether it is a local derby or not, they are a League Two team, who owns them, what they wear, who they are, has no bearing on the game whatsoever.”
It is safe to say that this added an additional spice to a game which already had fans excited due to the locality. Following the full-time whistle, Elliot Lee wanted to call out the Shrewsbury man for his pre-match comments.

Elliot Lee dedicates the win to Tom Flanagan
The home side haven’t been in the best form and it got worse as they fell to a defeat against a side in the league below. According to FotMob, they have won one in their last six so they were looking to get back on track.
You wouldn’t know that they were in poor form given the boastful and disrespectful comments about Wrexham from their defender.
They obviously resonated with the Reds and their players which saw Lee respond to him in his post-match interview with S4C.
On that, he said: “We knew as a team the importance of the game. They’re a big physical team and, being a local rivalry, it was always going to be a great game and I thought the boys were outstanding.
“It was a great performance and I’d like to dedicate that to one of their players, Tom Flanagan, who said that we were full of semi-pro players last year. So that one’s for you, mate.”
This would have been sweet for Lee to say which goes to show the added intensity Flanagan inadvertently caused. Why he would say such things before the game is silly as it only made Wrexham want that win even more. Given that he hasn’t featured since November, it is even more strange.
Lee and the Reds had the last laugh and everyone involved with the club will be pleased to get one up on their local rivals.
