Wrexham women played their first game of the season yesterday, in what was an absolute thriller that saw a return to top-flight football for the first time since 2016.

Not only was there a Hollywood script for Wrexham‘s men’s side last season, but the women also clinched promotion to the Genero Adran Premier by winning their playoff final – which is the Welsh first division.

This is the first time the women have been in the first division of the Welsh tier since 2016 – when the club was forced to fold.

Now, however, they’re well and truly back. And with a bang… the first fixture was absolutely chaotic.

Wrexham women’s 3-3 thriller

800 Wrexham fans piled into the Rock Stadium to watch the historic fixture, to which they were treated to a glorious game of football.

It was set to be a baptism of fire, with the Red Dragons’ first opponents being six-time Adran Premier champions Swansea City.

Such is life at Wrexham, the game was chaotic in the best possible way. The newly promoted side were not expecting to be 2-0 up against their opponents – that’s for sure.

Goals from Rebecca Pritchard and a second-half strike by Rosie Hughes put Wrexham two goals to the good just after half-time. They nearly made it a third following a Pritchard second, but that effort was ruled out for offside.

It’s never that simple…

This is when the game took a turn. With just fifteen minutes to go, Swansea got one back. Just five minutes later, a second hit the back of the Red Dragons net as fine volleyed finish from the edge of the box levelled the scores at 2-2.

But it was Wrexham who replied once again! They looked all but certain to have clinched the game in the 89th minute thanks to substitute Hannah Keryakoplis.

But, as we said, this is a Wrexham match.

Things got even better for the home side when Ellie Lake of the Swans player saw red… but that wasn’t the last action of the match.

In the dying embers, skipper Katy Hosford popped up with an equaliser in the fourth minute of injury time to provide what was the final twist of a ridiculous game.

Wrexham women’s next game is a trip to Pontypridd Town. Let’s hope for all three points there!
