Wrexham star man, Paul Mullin has revealed that surprisingly, he thanks his Mother and Katy Perry for keeping his footballing career alive.
Paul Mullin signed for Wrexham in 2021 on a free transfer and has gone on to be one of the best signings in recent memories.
With 88 goals in 112 games under the management of Phil Parkinson, it is safe to say his signing has been a true success.
Prior to his time with the Reds, he was a true phenomenon with Cambridge United as he scored 34 in 50 games for the U’s.
Before that, his career had been more of a tough challenge. He had featured for Morecambe, Swindon Town and Tranmere Rovers where he made just under 250 appearances between the three.
It appears that he nearly called it a day on his career back in 2018-2020 when he was with the Rovers.
What has Paul Mullin said about Katy Perry?
Paul Mullin? Katy Perry? What is going on here? It sounds crazy but in his new book, as reported by the Daily Mail, the latter influenced the Welshman’s career.
During his spell with Tranmere, there was a period where the Wrexham star struggled to feature in games. As a result, he nearly decided to pack up and move on with his career prospects.

On that, he said: “One morning I actually said to [my wife] Mollie, ‘I don’t want to go [to training with Tranmere]. I’m not going to play anyway. I can’t be arsed anymore. I just want to stay at home.’
“Mollie talked it over with me, and eventually, I did set off.”
On another day, the Welshman may have decided not to go and potentially change the course of his career. Given how good he had been since leaving Rovers, he made the right decision.
His career was partially saved by a random phone call from his mother on the way to training. Discussing the moment, he said: “On the way, Mum rang. ‘I’ve just been listening to a song,’ she told me, ‘and it’s definitely about you.’ ‘OK.’ I said dubiously. ‘What is it?’ ‘Katy Perry,’ she replied. ‘Firework.’
“I put it on in the car and for the first time actually listened to the lyrics. What I heard were amazing words about believing in yourself, unleashing your true potential, and finding that spark.”
It is a very random-sounding story about Katy Perry, but the meaning behind it is very heartwarming. Continuing on, Mullin added: “It made me really emotional as I thought about why mum was telling me to listen. I know everyone in my family loves me, same as I love them, but in that moment it was something really special, ‘Someone actually thinks that about me.'”
It is a great story to hear from Mullin and given how good he has been for Wrexham, maybe fans owe Katy Perry one.
