Wrexham have made rapid progress since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds came into the club and that has been summed up by back-to-back promotions.

Wrexham finally returned to the Football League in 2023 and now built on that success by heading straight to League One.

A 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers earlier in April booked Wrexham’s passage to the third tier for the first time since 2005.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have completely changed the club, going from being stuck in the National League to now looking up at how to possibly get to the Premier League.

That dream may still be off in the distance, but it has certainly moved closer into focus than it was five years ago.

McElhenney and Reynolds have not only put funds into the club to drive those promotions, but have also united everybody behind their project.

Wrexham’s progress has captured hearts and minds across the world and there is now a new club in the mix for McElhenney and Reynolds.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds invest in another football club

Variety report that McElhenney and Reynolds have now purchased a stake in Mexican side Club Necaxa.

It’s noted that Necaxa already have celebrity involvement as actress Eva Longoria and she is understood to have been key to bringing McElhenney and Reynolds into the club.

The likes of Mesut Ozil and Kate Upton are among the other famous investors at Necaxa, which is quite the mixture of personalities.

The report claims that McElhenney and Reynolds will work closely with Necaxa to build their profile in the game.

Many will have seen the success of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, making Wrexham a household name across the world.

Whether a Necaxa TV series comes out of this investment remains to be seen but Wrexham are not the only club for McElhenney and Reynolds to focus on now.

Who are Club Necaxa?

Founded in 1923, Necaxa were formed by a Scottish engineer named William H. Fraser and they were originally named after his ‘Light and Power Company’ in Puebla.

The Mexican Football Federation forced them to change their name as no clubs could be named after private companies, so the club was renamed to Necaxa, named after the Necaxa River.

The remarkable thing about Necaxa is that the club has heavy Cornish influence.

It’s understood that the Cornish community settled in Central Mexico and to this day, Cornish pasties remain part of the local culture.

Necaxa have only won three Primera Division titles in their history but have won the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup twice.

Recent years have been tricky for Necaxa and they won just three of 17 games in the 2023 Clausura.

Now ninth in the Liga MX, Necaxa are looking for better fortunes – and will be hoping that McElhenney and Reynolds can help inspire a Wrexham-style rise.
