Wrexham may need to dip into the free agent market after suffering some major injury blows in midfield.
Phil Parkinson continues to chase promotion to League Two but the last few days have been difficult.
Saturday’s defeat to Gillingham was a major blow, as were some rather unfavourable results for Wrexham’s promotion rivals.
Parkinson is in a tough spot right now as two midfielders – George Evans and James Jones – are now out with ‘quite serious’ injuries.
Parkinson suggested just a few days ago that it’s a situation Wrexham must ‘address’, leaving some believing that a free agent signing could be made.
Here are four potential signing for Wrexham outside of the transfer window – including a player who has already played under Parkinson in the past…
Robbie Burton
A former Welsh Under-21 international, Burton was schooled in the Arsenal academy and made a handful of appearances in the Dinamo Zagreb first team. The 24-year-old most recently turned out for Sligo Rovers in the Republic of Ireland before leaving the club in November. Burton saw a battle with meningitis stunt his career but could offer a short-term solution with some technical ability having caught the eye of Freddie Ljungberg at Arsenal.

Lee Evans
Evans is another ex-Wales youth international but he also earned four caps at senior level and has featured regularly in the Championship and League One with the likes of Sheffield United, Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town. The 29-year-old was released by Ipswich on the final day of the January transfer window and is now a free agent with the Tractor Boys helping him get back to full fitness ahead of a move. Evans even has some history with boss Parkinson having played under him at Bradford City, with Parkinson hailing him as ‘great passer’.

Jack Price
Price came up in the Wolverhampton Wanderers ranks just like Evans but has most recently been a regular with Colorado Rapids over in Major League Soccer. The 31-year-old was let go in October and has now fully recovered from an Achilles injury. Price even told The Denver Post that he would love a short-term deal somewhere around his hometown of Shrewsbury – just about 45 minutes away from Wrexham. A move to the Racecourse would surely appeal for the final stages of the season with Wrexham chasing promotion.

Matty Longstaff
Longstaff is another player back from injury having rehabilitated a major knee injury after being released by Newcastle United last summer. The 23-year-old has shown his quality in League Two with six goals in 16 games on loan at Mansfield Town in 2022 and getting him back to that kind of form could give Wrexham a real force. That won’t be easy, of course, but Longstaff has shown class before and is still young enough to develop for the future.
