He won a prestigious award at 18, now this Wrexham gem could follow in the footsteps of Max Cleworth

One of the biggest success stories to come out of Wrexham in recent years has been Max Cleworth.

Max Cleworth linked up with Wrexham in 2014, signing from Connah’s Quay Nomads youth team.

He made his debut in the Challenge Cup during the 2019/20 campaign but the centre-back really came into his own under Phil Parkinson.

The now 22-year-old was thrust heavily into the first-team picture during Parkinson’s first season at the helm, making 28 National League appearances.

His stock has continued to rise with each passing campaign and the Chester-born ace has really come into his own in 2024/25.

Parkinson praised Cleworth heavily after their recent 1-1 draw with Birmingham City, dubbing the stopper ‘absolutely superb’.

This was not the first and certainly won’t be the last time the defender impresses for Wrexham, with his six goals this term making him a serious asset at both ends of the pitch.

Wrexham gem can now follow in Max Cleworth footsteps

Wrexham have become well-known for spending since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over in 2021.

But players like Cleworth can save the club millions on players and now, another rising star from their youth ranks is surely set to follow in the centre-back’s footsteps.

The man in question is Harry Ashfield, who really made a name for himself when Wrexham beat Port Vale 4-1 on Tuesday evening.

Ashfield shone against Port Vale, scoring his first goal for the club on what was only his second-ever start.

His journey is only just beginning, and at 18 he still has a long way to go. But from what we have seen so far, it looks as though the teenage sensation will be the next big thing to emerge from Wrexham.

Harry Ashfield was already won Wrexham award

Ashfield’s first senior start for the Red Dragons came in the EFL Trophy earlier in 2024/25.

However, he has been making a name for himself in the club’s academy for several years now.

Back in May 2024, just two months after turning 18, Ashfield won a prestigious Wrexham award, being named the Bob Clark Academy Player of the Season.

After etching his name into the history books, the youngster said: “It’s been a great experience training with the lads, probably once a week. It’s been unbelievable; the type of players we have there are great with me and they’re unbelievable.”
