The cracks are beginning to widen in Wrexham’s assault for promotion and there are several issues that Phil Parkinson must resolve.
On Saturday, Wrexham lost for the fifth time in eight matches as top-six chasers Gillingham recorded a 1-0 victory at Priestfield.
The result left the Reds two points behind third-place Crewe Alexandra and four adrift of table toppers Mansfield.
Whilst it isn’t time to panic just yet as Phil Parkinson’s side are still hot on the heels of automatic promotion, there are some major problems that the manager needs to resolve.
Phil Parkinson has to get Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee firing again
In the early stages of this campaign, Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee were the deadly duo that fired Wrexham up the table.
Mullin’s return of 10 goals in his first 18 matches was accompanied by a sensational start from Lee, who fired an eye-watering seven strikes in his first eight appearances.
Since then, Wrexham’s top scorer last season with 37 has failed to score in his last seven matches – his longest barren spell since arriving at the club in 2021 – while Lee has one in his last 11 matches.
From being one of the division’s deadliest duos to only scoring once in a combined 18 matches, it’s been an alarming drop-off from two of Parkinson’s most invaluable players and he must get them firing again if Wrexham are to get promoted.
Away form has to improve
It is no secret that Wrexham are strong at Racecourse Ground. In 16 matches this season, they’ve taken 38 points from a possible 48 and top the standings for their home form.
On their travels, however, it is a completely different story.
The Reds have gone from being the second-best away team in the National League to occupying 13th position in League Two.
Wrexham centre-back Jordan Tunnicliffe has called for his teammates to rediscover the killer instinct that saw them flourish away from home last term.
If they do get back to their ruthless best, promotion will look like a strong possibility.
Ill-discipline
While Wrexham have collected the fifth least yellow cards (54) in the division, they are third for the most red cards received (6).
Two of those have come from Will Boyle, who overstepped the mark against Newport County and MK Dons while the other four were shown to Andy Cannon, George Evans, James Jones and Ryan Barnett.
Wrexham’s ill-discipline has cost them on numerous occasions and this must improve for them to achieve their promotion aim.
