Player with just seven league starts could now get his chance to shine at Wrexham

The National League rivalry from last term between Wrexham and Notts County is renewed this weekend as a mouth-watering clash awaits at the Racecourse Ground.

In one of the most dramatic games of last season, Ben Foster produced that penalty save against Notts County to push Wrexham one step closer to clinching the title.

Now, the two sides are battling to get out of League Two at the first time of asking, with Wrexham occupying fourth position and County sitting just outside the play-offs.

Wrexham strengthened their automatic promotion hopes by clinching a late victory against Sutton United on Tuesday night and upon securing their first win in four matches, Phil Parkinson learnt a lot about his squad of players.

While Will Boyle was a man mountain defensively, strikers Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer changed the game late on alongside defensive midfielder Luke Young.

Young replaced George Evans in the 64th minute against Sutton, in what was his first appearance since the Reds suffered a 3-1 defeat against Walsall in late December.

The 30-year-old certainly made a positive impression during his 26 minutes on the field and with Evans suffering from tightness in his glute, Parkinson may have to give Young only his second start in 21 League Two matches.

Luke Young may have chance to shine

Evans has only missed three matches for Wrexham this term after suffering a suspension as a result of his red card in the 2-1 win over Colchester United in December.

The former Manchester City academy graduate has been ever-present at the base of midfield since arriving from Millwall in the summer and has largely impressed.

However, if he isn’t deemed fit enough to start this weekend, the Wrexham captain could stake his claim for a spot in midfield.

During their surge towards the National League title last term, Young lead by example through his tireless and industrious performances that lead to huge praise from Parkinson after beating Oldham Athletic 3-0 in the FA Cup.

Hailing him as a “key player”, Parkinson said: “He works tirelessly for the team and his distribution was spot on.

“He is a good player, he is a key player for us and I always enjoy watching Luke play because he plays with such heart.”

When he pulls on a shirt, Young wears his heart on his sleeve and embodies the levels of work ethic that other players in the squad should aspire to.

After being introduced from the bench in midweek, the former Plymouth Argyle midfielder took responsibility on the pitch while his leadership played a part in securing a late winner.

Although he’s found game time hard to come by this term, an injury to Evans may have opened the door for him to seal a rare start and show Wrexham what they’ve been missing.
