Predicting Wrexham’s contract decisions as Phil Parkinson plans for League One

Add as preferred source on Google

Wrexham are back in League One after nearly 20 years away – and that leaves Phil Parkinson to make some big decisions over his squad this summer.

The last few days have been one big celebration for Wrexham fans after securing promotion on Saturday afternoon.

The 6-0 thrashing of Forest Green Rovers has seen Wrexham secure a spot in League One for the first time since 2005.

The League Two title is now out of reach after Stockport County were crowned champions on Tuesday night.

Wrexham will be in League One regardless though and many fans are now naming dream signings for the return to the third tier.

If Wrexham are going to bring new faces in, some players will have to go out too.

A number of Wrexham players are out of contract this summer and Wrexham must now weigh up whether they are ready for League One action.

Here are our predictions as Wrexham weigh up new deals for imminent free agents…

Wrexham out of contract stars: stay or go?

Liam Hall

Hall joined Wrexham last summer, penning a one-year deal as Phil Parkinson praised his work ethic. The 19-year-old hasn’t made a single first-team appearance this season, but we would expect him to earn at least another year. Verdict: One-year extension.

Rob Lainton

Lainton is about to bring up six years at Wrexham but injuries have unfortunately become far too common. The 34-year-old is a great character and Wrexham fans will be sad to see him go, but the time may have come. Verdict: Released.

Mark Howard

In an ideal world, Wrexham would sign Arthur Okonkwo permanently and have a veteran behind him. Howard could be that player but at 37, he will have a decision to make over whether to continue his playing career, especially given his budding media career. Parkinson is a fan too, having previously worked together at Bolton Wanderers. Verdict: One-year extension if he wants to continue playing.

Aaron Hayden

Wrexham raided Carlisle United for Hayden in 2021 and his goalscoring ability for a centre back was simply ridiculous in the National League. Hayden has only played three league games since the end of November though and it looks like the 27-year-old is no longer in the plans. Verdict: Released.

Jordan Tunnicliffe

A solid defender in the National League last season, Tunnicliffe has found first-team action harder to come by this term. The 30-year-old has only played seven league games this season and just two in 2024, so we would imagine that he will be let go. Verdict: Released

Ben Tozer

Tozer is an outstanding character in the dressing room and his long throws have become the stuff of legend at Wrexham. Now 34, Tozer played more regularly than Hayden and Tunnicliffe this season and we would see a situation where Wrexham offer him another year as a veteran presence with a view to a coaching role. Verdict: One-year extension with coaching role.

Callum McFadzean

McFadzean is another case of a player featuring regularly in the National League but fading in League Two. The 30-year-old has made just one league appearance this season and is third in the pecking order at left wing back, behind James McClean and Jacob Mendy. Verdict: Released.

Luke Young

Part of the furniture at Wrexham for six years now, Young has been an outstanding servant for the club. A hard worker and great leader in the middle, Young may be allowed to go as Wrexham look to add more quality in midfield for League One. Verdict: Released.

James McClean

An outstanding contributor this season, McClean has racked up 13 assists in all competitions this season. The Irishman is 34 now but his versatility to play at wing back and in central midfield has been important under Parkinson. Verdict: One-year extension.
