Wrexham secured a 3-0 victory over play-off hopefuls Crewe Alexandra as one player continued his excellent form for Phil Parkinson.

Wrexham wrapped up promotion last weekend with a 6-0 hammering of Forest Green Rovers.

The Reds entered their penultimate match of the season against Crewe Alexandra level on goal difference in third, leapfrogging Mansfield into second with a comfortable 3-0 win.

Ollie Palmer opened the scoring with a header from a Paul Mullin cross and then turned provider as the Liverpool-born goal-machine got on the end of a Palmer flick-on before lobbing the keeper.

A dominant performance from Phil Parkinson‘s men was capped off by an Andy Cannon goal, with the Reds registering a staggering 25 shots on goal and 10 on target.

Wrexham’s midfield destroyer and goal-scoring midfielder rolled into one set the tone for their performance as he stood out like a sore thumb.

Andy Cannon continued his excellent form v Crewe Alexandra

Several players are in with a Player of the Year shout at Wrexham, and none more so than Cannon, whose consistent performances have earned him huge praise.

Hailed as “super” during the match, Cannon was everywhere on the pitch; crunching into tackles, driving forward from deep and oozing serious class in the final third.

It was a display that the supporters have become used to seeing as the 28-year-old ran the show without really breaking sweat.

From winning the ball deep into his half and dictating possession centrally, Cannon’s role in Wrexham’s lineup has grown as the seasons aged having scored four goals and supplied two assists in his last seven matches.

It’s such form that points towards him dominating in the league above, with Wrexham already well-equipped in the engine room.

Wrexham’s midfield doesn’t need strengthening much in League One

Of course, Parkinson would like to add an extra body or two in midfield, especially with captain Luke Young leaving on a free transfer in the summer.

Young was awarded a rare start at the base of midfield today, replacing the tenacious George Evans.

Although the 31-year-old looks set to depart, Wrexham’s current best trio of Evans, Cannon and Elliot Lee looks equipped to tackle the third tier.

After all, they have made 326 appearances between them in League One while Lee has won promotion with Luton Town to the Championship too.

Parkinson has several fires to put out this summer as he aims to bolster his central defence, striker and goalkeeper position, putting midfield lower down the list of priorities.

The depth they’ve got currently, with James McClean and Tom O’Connor also able to slot into the engine room suggests they’ll be fine without many additions.
