The irrepressible Paul Mullin is leading Wrexham’s charge towards League One promotion, but there is another player who must now step up.
Wrexham goal machine Paul Mullin can reach a century of goals for the club tonight against Doncaster Rovers.
Mullin has scored 19 goals and supplied five assists in 36 matches this season, with the Liverpool-born forward leading their charge towards promotion.
The 29-year-old went through a seven-match spell without scoring between January and February but has now netted an impressive eight goals in his previous seven outings, including a brace against title rivals Mansfield Town on Good Friday.
It isn’t a surprise to see Mullin lead Wrexham’s goal-scoring charts for the third season running, however, the former Cambridge United striker hasn’t always been top of the tree.
Elliot Lee made a blistering start to life in League Two
Mullin missed the first six league matches of the campaign after puncturing his lung in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United.
During this period without their goal machine, midfielder Elliot Lee stepped up and carried the goalscoring burden.
Lee started the season in blistering form, scoring an impressive seven goals in his first eight League Two outings, including two assists.
The attacking midfielder oozed confidence in the early stages of the campaign and thrived as the main man for Wrexham.
Unfortunately, the 29-year-old didn’t keep up that run and since the turn of the year, his scoring form has tailed off completely.
Elliot Lee’s Wrexham form has dropped off
Once oozing confidence and firing from all cylinders, Lee has struggled in front of goal, particularly since the start of 2024.
The former Luton Town star has only scored twice in his last 18 matches.
In the early parts of the season, Lee scored more goals than anyone (4) outside the area at the end of October.
With almost half of his goals at that point counting as long-range strikes, the midfielder perhaps doesn’t shoot outside the box as much or when he does, the ball invariably goes wide or over the bar.
Despite his form tailing off, scoring his last goal in a 4-0 win over Accrington Stanley last month, Lee still plays a prominent role in midfield for Wrexham.
He’s started all but one of their last 25 matches in the league, and while he hasn’t contributed as much as he would have liked, he’s still performed to a high standard.
However, as we approach the final six games of the campaign, starting against Doncaster tonight, Lee would love to get his name on the scoresheet and add to his tally of 15 goals this term.
Lee bagged a thunderbolt in the reverse fixture, so another goal tonight could kickstart a strong end to the season for him and Wrexham.
