Wrexham’s signing of Andy Cannon has been one of their best pieces of business in the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era. They could repeat that success by capturing another EFL ‘machine’.

Cannon was sold by the ambition of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds as he chose to drop down three divisions to play in the National League.
Having achieved promotion from the fifth tier on loan at Stockport County, the 28-year-old arrived with expectations of achieving similar at the Racecourse Ground in the following, doing so by helping them win the title.
Phil Parkinson‘s men have since achieved back to back promotions for the first time in their history, with Cannon starring alongside Elliot Lee as two vital cogs in their midfield.
Now a fan favourite at Wrexham, many believe Cannon should win the Player of the Year award for his efforts, scoring five and assisting five in 34 League Two appearances.
After raiding Hull for Cannon in 2022, Wrexham should return to East Yorkshire this summer and target another midfielder.
Wrexham should sign Greg Docherty from Hull City
Greg Docherty is poised to leave Hull this summer. The Scotsman sees his contract expire in June, but the club have shown no interest in renewing it.
Liam Rosenior has used the 27-year-old as a squad player this term, brought on to see out a game instead of playing a major part in their midfield plans.
Docherty has struggled to dislodge their preferred pairing of Jean Michael Seri and Tyler Morton. Although he hasn’t let that deter him, often impressing from the bench in his 14 Championship outings.
The energetic Scotsman would bring an abundance of quality to Wrexham’s midfield, namely an ability to drive forward at speed, win possession back for his team and contribute in the final third.
Greg Docherty’s League One record
Much like Cannon, Docherty has played most of his career in League One and as the Reds have just been promoted, experience will be vital.
Once lauded as a “machine” by former manager Grant McCann, Docherty’s midfield displays for Hull helped them achieve the third-tier title in 2021, featuring in all but two of their matches.
He also enjoyed a fruitful spell at Shrewsbury Town in the 2018/19 campaign. Docherty posted his best scoring campaign, registering seven goals and eight assists.
Remarkably, the Scotsman has made more appearances in the Championship (90) than in League One (85), but returning to the third tier and working under Parkinson could be the right move.
With Hull looking to challenge for the Premier League, Docherty could be surplus to requirements, potentially opening the door for a third-tier club to pounce.
As Wrexham aim to challenge near the top, bringing in a title-winning midfielder would add serious quality to their engine room and a project that the former Rangers man could be sold by.
Indeed, watching Docherty in midfield with Lee and Cannon is a mouth-watering prospect.
