Wrexham could swoop for ‘brilliant’ goalkeeper after release from Championship club

Wrexham’s pursuit of a goalkeeper is arguably their most important piece of business this summer.

The Reds captured Arthur Okonkwo on a season-long loan from Arsenal last summer.

A move for him happened after Ben Foster announced his retirement from football. Okonkwo joined on deadline day, and although many expected Mark Howard to keep the number one spot, the talented shot-stopper soon made it his own.

Standing at 6 ft 6 inches tall, Okonkwo’s presence in between the sticks and incredible reflexes helped him become a fan favourite at the Racecourse. The 22-year-old kept the third most clean sheets (14) and earned a spot in the League Two Team of the Season.

With Phil Parkinson describing him as having “real potential”, there’s no surprise Wrexham are trying to sign him on a free transfer following his release from Arsenal.

However, with several Championship and European clubs reportedly interested, the chances of signing him are looking bleak and the club must look at an alternative.

Wrexham should rush to sign Joe Wildsmith on a free

Derby County made the shock decision to release Joe Wildsmith from his contract at Pride Park.

Despite having an excellent season at the club where he won the Golden Glove in League One for most clean sheets, and helped the Rams win promotion, the 28-year-old saw his two-year stay come to an end.

It was a bold call from Paul Warne, who has a replacement lined up, but this should open up the door for Wrexham to swoop in.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds desperately need a starting goalkeeper and while Okonkwo is their priority, Wildsmith’s experience in League One could propel him above the youngster.

Whilst Okonkwo is a great long-term option, Wildsmith is reaching the peak years of his career and given he’s just helped the Rams win promotion, it seems a no-brainer to snap him up on a free transfer.

Joe Wildsmith would set the tone for Wrexham’s summer

During his campaign on loan, Okonkwo built up a strong understanding with Wrexham’s back three, usually comprising Tom O’Connor, Max Cleworth and Eoghan O’Connell.

It is therefore important that Wrexham get a new goalkeeper in early so they can build up a partnership with the defence.

Lauded as “brilliant” last term, Wildsmith formed an indispensable defensive trio with Eiran Cashin and Curtis Nelson, who helped Derby seal their place back in the Championship.

Given how well he performed in Derbyshire, particularly towards the back end of the campaign, it was a surprise to see him leave.

However, if Wrexham have aspirations of challenging the play-offs, or perhaps automatic promotion, signing Wildsmith would show their intent from the off this summer.
