Wrexham should consider a move for free agent Jed Steer to replace Ben Foster, following his retirement today.
The 40-year-old has suddenly decided to hang up his boots again after admitting he was not at the required level anymore, having struggled in Wrexham’s 5-5 draw against Swindon Town at the weekend.
Wrexham now have a decision to make. They did sign Luke McNicholas this summer, whilst veteran Mark Howard is also available, but they may have the perfect opportunity to recruit quality in the position.
Steer, 30, is a free agent having departed Aston Villa in the summer, and he has bags of experience to his name despite mostly featuring as a backup during his time in the Premier League and Championship.
Wrexham have convinced a number of players to drop down to League Two under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and Steer could be a very astute signing who could be useful for the next few years.
Promotion experience
Steer made just 36 appearances for Villa since joining ten years ago, having also embarked on a number of loan spells within the EFL, but did help them achieve promotion from the Championship in 2019, as he played all three games in the playoffs, and was the penalty shootout hero against West Brom in the semi-final second leg.

Striker Tammy Abraham described him as “brilliant” following his heroics, where he saved two decisive penalties to reach Wembley, and he has over 100 appearances in the top three divisions combined.
Steer could relish the chance to finally become a number one option, and at 30, he could be the first choice for a few years even if Wrexham achieve promotion. On a free transfer, it is hard to look past Steer as the perfect experienced replacement for Foster.
