Wrexham’s success in the transfer window could hinge on who departs the club this summer as Phil Parkinson assesses his squad.
It’s no secret that Phil Parkinson has carried a big squad with him at Wrexham since joining the club in the summer of 2021.
The Wrexham boss has often had an abundance of options at his disposal and as they’ve made a rapid surge up the division, this has become an issue.
Parkinson offloaded several senior players at the end of the last campaign, including Luke Young, Ben Tozer and Aaron Hayden but he still needs to offload some more players before he can invest.
Wrexham have a squad of 21 players currently signed up for next season, and the EFL rules state you can register 22. This has given the Welsh a little bit of an issue as they look to bolster their squad this summer.
Will Boyle could fall down the pecking order at Wrexham
Will Boyle has divided opinion since making the switch from Huddersfield Town last year.
The 28-year-old had his critics after being sent off against Newport County in January but then responded to those doubting him by putting in a string of outstanding defensive displays in March.
Boyle was then frozen out of the Wrexham squad in the final stretch of the campaign, with Parkinson settling for Max Cleworth, Eoghan O’Connell and Tom O’Connor as a trio.
Ending his debut season in Wales as a fourth-choice defender, the Englishman could slip to fifth in the pecking order if Parkinson gets his hands on a new centre-back.
He’s already seen an approach rejected for Wigan Athletic’s Jason Kerr while the Reds are also interested in former Blackpool defender Marvin Ekpiteta.
A new signing in that position could spell bad news for Boyle, who wants to be playing regular football.

Will Boyle’s situation at Wrexham assessed
Once dubbed “fantastic” by Neil Warnock, Boyle will still be a regular fixture in Parkinson’s plans heading into League One, captaining Cheltenham Town in the 2021/22 campaign.
However, with the prospect of Wrexham signing another one or two defenders, this perhaps places his position in jeopardy.
The signing of Ekpiteta, for instance, would be a big upgrade on Boyle and the fact he’s already fourth choice by the looks of it suggests his game time could be limited.
That isn’t guaranteed to be the case as he may impress in pre-season and become a regular starter, though with his contract expiring in 2026, it would be interesting to see whether Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds cash in on the colossal defender should an offer come in.
