Wrexham are enjoying an unprecedented period in their club’s history.

Three successive promotions from the National League to the Championship means that Phil Parkinson’s side are enjoying second tier football for the first time since 1982.

The mood of the club has changed drastically since Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac secured their takeover back in 2021 and the Red Dragons have been unstoppable ever since.

Given their perceived lack of football knowledge, there was a lot of trepidation about their intentions four years ago, however that has since been blown away in emphatic style. Reynolds himself has even been surprised along the journey.

Ryan Reynolds ‘didn’t expect’ to understand the passion of Wrexham fans

Speaking on season one, episode fourteen of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, Reynolds explained how he had not expected to understand the passion of the fans so quickly after becoming Wrexham’s owner.

The team had just beaten Stockport County in the 2022 FA Trophy semi-final thanks to a stunning late show from Paul Mullin and Reynolds was blown away by the overwhelming emotions that came his way.

Reynolds stated: “I was so into this endeavour as just like a zoomed out macro project that involved a club, business that is also the club and the community, and how those kind of intersect.

“I didn’t expect to take the red pill with respect to Wrexham and really kind of go down that rabbit hole with them and start to understand the kind of the actual fabric and DNA of their passion and love for this club.

“It sort of transcends wins and losses. I don’t think I ever really understood football. But that Stockport match, I felt it in my bones.”

Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac determined to see through Wrexham’s Premier League dream

The rise of Wrexham through the English football pyramid has captured the attention of the footballing world, however their next step will be the toughest.

Reynolds and McElhenny want Premier League football by 2027 but may have to be patient given the incredibly tough challenge of earning promotion from the Championship.

A summer with thirteen new signings and close to £40m being spent shows that the owners are serious about their ambition and are already putting foundations in place to be a top flight side.

Improvements to the Racecourse Ground are well underway and Michael Williamson is also pressing ahead with plans for the club’s training facilities and academy.

That passion and desire from Reynolds and McElhenney cannot be questioned and who would be brave enough to bet against them reaching their ultimate goal in the end?
