Wrexham fans have a lot to be grateful for this weekend as their side faced Southampton in the Championship season opener.

The first game of the 2021-22 season, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s first full season in charge at the club ended in a 2-2 draw at Solihull Moors.

Since then, Phil Parkinson has masterminded footballing history in taking the club to three successive promotions and one step away from Premier League football.

Wrexham supporters must have been pinching themselves at St Mary’s Stadium but it hasn’t all been a smooth process along the way – just ask Reynolds at the start of his ownership reign.

Ryan Reynolds revealed that he was ‘addicted’ to being Wrexham owner from the start

Speaking on season one episode four of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series, Reynolds revealed three things that made him ‘addicted’ to being the Wrexham owner.

Following a difficult start to the first campaign under Parkinson, none of the things mentioned by Reynolds were seen as positive aspects, but he had fallen in love with the passion of the game.

Reynolds stated: “I have only been the owner of a football club for a short time but so far, I’ve found it to be very time-consuming, emotionally exhausting, financially idiotic and utterly addictive.”

The comments came as the Red Dragons won just four of their first 12 league games back in 2021 and fans were questioning whether the club was making progress under the regime.

Fast forward four years and Wrexham may have a similarly difficult start to this campaign, however, they are now plying their trade in the Championship rather than non-league football.

What Rob McElhenney thought after Wrexham’s tough start to the season in 2021

The Red Dragons could face adversity this season with them stepping up a level in quality, however, the owners have already held their nerve in that sense.

As mentioned, after a tough start to the 2021-22 campaign, the owners brushed off bad results and kept their faith with the team.

McElhenney stated in the same episode as Reynolds: “I’m used to being able to go into a writer’s room and come out at the end of it knowing what’s going to happen and I don’t know what’s going to happen here.”

Wrexham fans will sleep easy knowing they have owners that care about the football club and the town, they will keep striving to bring as much success as possible.
