Phil Parkinson comments on transfers as ‘competitive market’ leaves Wrexham ‘looking everywhere’ for signings

Wrexham are looking to make more signings as Phil Parkinson prepares to kick off the Championship season against Southampton.

July is now just around the corner, and Wrexham’s transfer window may be about to burst into life.

Phil Parkinson usually keeps his powder dry early in transfer windows, and July tends to be Wrexham’s busiest month of the summer.

One signing has already been secured, with Ryan Hardie completing his move to Wrexham earlier in June.

A second signing now appears to be close, with goalkeeper Danny Ward undergoing a medical with Wrexham on Monday.

Ward has been released by Leicester City and looks set to re-join Wrexham on a free transfer as competition for Arthur Okonkwo.

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham transfer plans

Wrexham will look to finalise the move for Ward and then move on to further additions, with so many names linked over the summer.

One interesting name emerged earlier in June as reports in Australia suggested Wrexham fancy signing Ryan Teague from Melbourne Victory.

Wrexham will face Melbourne Victory in July and will have the chance to watch Teague up close and personal.

Parkinson has spoken to ESPN reporter Joey Lynch ahead of the trip Down Under, and was unsurprisingly asked about Teague.

Parkinson cooled the speculation by suggesting that a move for Teague is not at the top of Wrexham’s radar right now, but he couldn’t truly rule anybody in or out.

The Wrexham boss admitted that the transfer market is ‘very competitive’ at Championship level, so perhaps a move for Teague will be looked at down the line.

“No. There are so many players we get linked with. It’s incredible,” said Parkinson.

“At the moment, that’s not at the top of our radar… but we’re always looking, and we never rule anyone out or in. Because it’s a very competitive market when you’re trying to get Championship-level players. We’re looking everywhere for players we feel can make a difference and continue with us on the growth of the club,” he added.

Wrexham have midfield options with Championship experience

Parkinson admitted that Wrexham are looking ‘everywhere’ for potential signings, which may well include the Australian market.

Wrexham are yet to shop abroad in the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era, and Parkinson’s preference may be to focus on Championship experience.

Teague is a right-footed holding midfield player, and Wrexham want Blackburn Rovers’ Lewis Travis – a right-footed holding midfield player.

Wrexham may believe that Travis is more of a sure thing in the Championship than an import such as Teague, especially as Travis has racked up almost 250 second-tier appearances.

Perhaps Teague can propel himself to the top of Wrexham’s wish list with a strong performance against Parkinson’s side next month, but we can imagine targets closer to home being a little more appealing right now.
