Wrexham can now start planning for life in League One having secured promotion back to the third tier for the first time since 2005.
The last few days have been party time for Wrexham after beating Forest Green Rovers 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Wrexham were far too good for League Two’s bottom club and raced into a 4-0 lead by half-time.
Two more second-half goals secured promotion for Wrexham with Mansfield Town’s win at Milton Keynes Dons securing Phil Parkinson’s place in League One.
Wrexham do still have two games to go, but we couldn’t blame fans for dreaming about who could sign for for the club this summer.
If Wrexham were able to attract the likes of Steven Fletcher and James McClean in League Two, who knows who could turn up in League One?
Parkinson and co will surely have a host of targets in mind already and one player stands out from the crowd…
Arthur Okonkwo to Wrexham latest
One of the priorities this summer will surely be the signing of goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.
The 22-year-old has spent this season on loan at Wrexham from Arsenal and has developed into a fine goalkeeper.
Okonkwo’s contract at Arsenal expires this summer and he looks set to be on his way out of the Emirates Stadium.
Wrexham will surely push for Okonkwo to sign a permanent deal but this could come down to money.
The Athletic claim that there is expected to be a ‘scramble’ for Okonkwo’s signature and a Wrexham pursuit hinges on his wage demands.
Wrexham are understood to have paid less than half of Okonkwo wages during his time at the STōK Cae Ras.
That means Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will have to dig deep in order to give Okonkwo similar terms to the ones he had at Arsenal.
Okonkwo worth the investment
Much of Wrexham’s business in the last couple of years has surrounded signing proven players who can make an instant impact.
McClean and Fletcher spring to mind but even the likes of Will Boyle, Eoghan O’Connell, George Evans, Elliot Lee, Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin fit that mould too.
Wrexham haven’t really placed a focus on signing young players with resale value and that will surely become more of a priority after back to back promotions.
Okonkwo would be the kind of talent Wrexham could develop and sell on for big money down the line, with prospects for the future needed alongside the considerable experience in the squad.
Okonkwo’s wages could be a big ask but it could be a worthwhile investment given the quality he has already shown and the room he has to grow in the future.
There will be other clubs in the mix but we would hope to see Okonkwo return to Wrexham once again after enjoying such a strong campaign.
