Wrexham have completed the signing of defender Will Boyle from Huddersfield Town, their first addition in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old has dropped two divisions, joining from the Championship, in which he made 18 appearances last season.

Boyle will join Phil Parkinson’s squad as they prepare for their first season back in League Two since 2008, and he is excited about challenging for back-to-back promotions with his new clubs.

“I had a few clubs interested and Wrexham were obviously one of them, and I decided that this is the right place for me to come and play my football,” he told LeaderLive.

“The ambitions of the club match my own.

“I want to be playing at a higher level than what I have come to play at and the club has got clear ambitions to be doing that.”

How big a signing is this for Wrexham?

An initially frustrating summer window meant that Wrexham had not made any signings until now, but Boyle will bring a lot of quality and experience to the side.

He previously won promotion from League Two with Cheltenham two years ago, and made 196 appearances for the club before returning to Huddersfield, where he initially started his career.

The centre-back only made 20 appearances for the Terriers before joining Wrexham in a somewhat surprising move. Dropping down two divisions to join the Red Dragon clearly indicates that he does not plan on spending much time in this League.

Boyle could add solidity and experience at the back for Wrexham, and if they achieve promotion again next season, they may fancy their chances at keeping him as they attempt to navigate League One. However, if they fail to challenge near the top of the table, it seems unlikely that Boyle would be happy to stay for another season in the fourth division.
